I will be cooking a rack of pig ribs and a pan of collards. I might heat up a can of beans if I feel ambitious.

If I m feeling better, we'll also be having Hopping John for a day or two. I never can make a small pot of that, but like spaghetti or several other dishes, it is better the next day.

Well, I'm about to get ready to go into work for a very late opening today. After that, DH brought home some frozen blue gill from a co-worker recently, so we were thinking about a fish fry to celebrate the new year. No clue what we'll have with the fish- further accompaniment will depend on what time I actually get home from work today. I'm only scheduled until 2:00, but it's a slim crew, so if it ends up being crazy busy, I'll be sticking around longer.

Local tradition requires us to eat pork and sauerkraut "for luck".
I do not like sauerkraut but hubby insists on it just in case it really works for bringing luck and he always insists that I take at least one bite so that we have good luck together.
I will be making pulled pork in the Instant Pot and sauerkraut on the side. Traditional pork and sauerkraut is a pork roast baked in the oven with sauerkraut around it and it is served with mashed potatoes.

Klobase, ham and sauerkraut. Klobase is steamed, placed in crockpot with sauerkraut on top. But I don't like sauerkraut either, rinsing off the sausage pieces before I add it to a roll. But the aroma is an essential part of the holiday. Brings back many memories of visiting numerous relatives(all deceased) and the good but simpler times.
Having guests over later and in addition to the meats, we will have plenty of veggies, cheeses and pickles to have choices. No mashed potatoes though.

Down here, the New Year's traditional meal is pork (really traditional is hog jowl, but ham is considered an acceptable substitute) along with blackeyed peas for luck. So that is what we had - ham, blackeyed peas, plus sides of cabbage, cornbread, and carrots. So we should have the good luck covered, right?

brownrexx, not the recipe thread but have you ever tried cooking sauerkraut with pork chops laying on top? I always said I didn't like it until I tried this and somehow the pork totally changes the taste. What is hoppin' john? I ended up making a sort of soup that we loved - cooked the blackeyed peas and drained the spinach and poured it right in the pot and cut up some ham and threw it in too. Was delicious.

That's funny. I have heard of Hoppin' John, and even eaten it, but no one in my family ever called it that. I had to look it up, too.

I always said I didn't like it until I tried this and somehow the pork totally changes the taste. I think that would taste better than the plain sauerkraut but since I am not a believer in food bringing me luck, I choose to avoid sauerkraut altogether except for the bite that hubby forces me to eat "for luck".
