He suggested google but pffffffttt on google The only reason I would cut a garlic leaf would be if I wanted to use the leafs in a stir-fry.... And then it would be one or two plants, and not the whole patch! I'd be more likely though to pull the whole immature plant for cooking than to cut the leafs off. I don't mind cutting off chives, or garlic chives when they are about 6" tall. I'm harvesting those for the leafs anyway, and not for bulbs.

Don't cut those leaves. If they are hardnecks, you can cut the scape off when it's 6" or more. If softnecks, forget about using any of the foliage as it needs all of it.

I guess you could cut some of the greens for immediate use. Just know the less top there is, the less bulb there will be.
For onion-y greens, I broadcast some scallion. as a sacrifice crop. I doubt if there will be a single surviver by the end of August.

Three varieties, eh? Every time I count mine I get a bigger number! I think that it's 33 or 34. Peaked at 27 one time and said enough of that foolishness and intended on going back to only 4 or 5. Now my beds are mainly for increasing planting stock for WeGrowGarlic.

I have about 150 garlic growing, at least that is what I planted and they all came up..., probably more, I think I missed some and had volunteers when digging them up prior. Yes, I have very modest sized beds. I grow the German Purple Striped Garlic hard necked plus the Elephant Garlic. I don't cut the scapes until after they are dying back a bit because I harvest the bulbils on top of the purple stripes...they are for planting! The elephant garlic were planted by cloves this past season as were my purple stripes so I have a lot of garlic to harvest for my family this year. I will be replanting the cloves of course and I rehome those bulbils every year. The rest of my space are Egyptian onions which are towering right now and Comfrey, herbs and teas. I have to put another bed in just to plant my veggies...better hurry....

When it's time to pull the garlic, how long do you let it dry and do you lay it in full sun or maybe some shade?

At the farm, we hang it in an old corn crib. Rely on wind at home but fans in the crib. Either way, hung about a month before considering it dry. Martin
