I am quite aware that birds love peppers especially the red birds eye type but i didn't know that the love maters too! Given that I have red curants and a few red slicers with bird bites but i didn't know until recently that they will attack white and green tomatoes too!

They must be hungry! Here they leave the green ones alone.

I saw a mockingbird pecking holes in my green tomatoes a few years ago. Not sure if it was after food or water.

I have heard all my life that birds will go after ripening tomatoes for the water during a dry time, and I have had birds wipe out a tomato crop like that. Supposedly if you put a source of water like a bird bath near the garden it will deter this activity. I'm really surprised I haven't had bird issues yet, as we are very dry, but there are a lot of berry types out right now that may be having an effect to deter them.
I've never had a bird go after unripe maters before. I'll sure be keeping an eye out for that tho.

We have a small pond with a water fall and next to a creek we don't have that problem .. But it could be because we put up those whirly gig things to keep the birds out .... altho it doesn't deter the bugs

I keep bird baths full in the front and back yards. Birds are in and out of the garden all day every day but I have had very little veggies pecked by the birds. The mocking birds and blue birds sit on the fences and on the black berry wires watching for bugs .Other than the mulberry trees , now those the birds do get but thats why I planted the mulberry. Also have heard all my life that birds are thirsty rather than hungrey when they bother garden veggies and berries .

We also take care of the birds. They do a great job here with the bugs. ;D ;D We give them fresh water daily & make sure they have a seed snack at all times. ;D ;D We do serious feeding in the winter. & we have 2 bird bath heaters. ;D ;D
