Lucy the Squirrel Slayer has been promoted to Bunny's Bane. In the past 12 months 3 squirrels met their end, 2 deer fore legs and a deer head showed up in the back yard of my parents house. This past week the Beast caught and devoured a full grown rabbit, it couldn't run up a pine tree like the squirrels.

I misremembered the name, it's Lily, currently the stinking dog as my dad can't bath her very easily. She probably rolled in her bunny remains.

Oh, dear! Lily looks so innocent in the picture - who, me? Why do dogs enjoy those stinky smells so much? Our dogs used to find the rottenest, most decomposed fish to roll in. Shampoo couldn't get rid of it all, almost as bad as skunk spray.

Ewww...you guys are making me re-think getting a dog when I move to the new place. (To be clear, it's the rolling in decomposing animal corpses part I am concerned about.)

Mostly it her running all day pursuing squirrels. When she gets hot she jumps in a big bucket of water that we keep outside, rolls around in it, jumps out and turns around to take a drink. She eats her quarry quickly before any of the bigger neighborhood dogs can try to take it.

The cats might want to cast a vote on that and be in charge of counting the votes. Probably they would. Neither of my cats likes dogs at all. Certainly the dog would have to have been socialized with cats/trained not to attack cats, or I'd have to get him/her as a puppy who could be trained not to attack cats. The cats would just have to put up with the dog's presence. Living in the semi-country I am going to want a watchdog to give warning of wild animals prowling around. Both the four-legged and two-legged types need looking out for, unfortunately.

Lily was stinking when I got to my parents house so I gave her a bath. In the process I discovered that she was covered in fleas. Dad had put drops on her but she had almost immediately run to the neighbors pond and went swimming, they have to stay dry for 3 days after Advantix drops are applied in order to soak in. I went and bought Capstar pills that kill all fleas on her within 24 hours but that have no lasting effect. Then reapplied drops. She gets out of solitary confinement this afternoon. Meanwhile the squirrels are having a ball.

Lily can't seem to shake these fleas. Mom has given her so many of the Capstars that she had a reaction last night. Dad went and bought the wrong flea and tick yard spray from the one that I told him to buy at Lowes, I even sent them a picture of it.

Do guineas eat fleas too, or just ticks? Maybe a flock of guineas is what your dad needs. But seriously, I'm sorry to hear that. Normally treating the pet plus the house and the yard at the same time works, at least for a while. Is the yard fenced? When Lily is outside, does she have opportunities to interact with other dogs who keep re-infesting her with new fleas? Also, I have read about fleas developing resistances to some of the pesticides. This is the kind of thing that varies area by area - in one town the fleas have developed a resistance to one flea pesticide, and in another town the fleas have developed a resistance to a different one. In other towns, resistance isn't a problem. Your local vet may be able to tell you if other people are reporting having trouble getting rid of fleas and whether there is a pattern to which brands of flea treatments they are using. In any case, if the existing treatments are not working, maybe it's time to switch to brands with different active ingredients?

Guineas only eat ticks and Lily might eat the guineas. The yards fenced on 3 sides but is hardly dog proof. Dogs roam freely in the neighborhood. I imagine her dog friend Lulu is also likely infested but she runs any other dogs off of her property. My nephew gave her a flea bath last night and I have a ground treatment spray for the most likely places that she gets reinfested.

We have always used Revolution on our pups and haven't seen a flea in years. 'fingers crossed'

spike, a much hotter and wetter climate with a much longer flea season. I sprayed all of the likely infested outside areas this morning. I haven't found more than 2 fleas at a time on her this weekend so the flea shampoo seems to be working.

Glad to hear the flea shampoo is working. We use Revolution year round. When we rescued our Hershey he was full of heart worms so we take no chances. Silly since there really aren't many skeeters or flea issues in the winter but once burnt is enough.

Okay Lily had been shut up in an outside pen or inside for about a month while we tried to get the flea problem under control. Yesterday afternoon Dad let her out to run and catch up on her squirrel slaughter. When it got 6:30 she didn't want to come in for the nigh, ran under the workshop. Finally at about a quarter to 10 pm she showed up at the door. I guess she was hungry.
