Last week in the daytime, I looked out Mom's kitchen window and saw a big Raccoon coming up to the house with a baby in its mouth. She climbed up the concrete steps and went over the edge and disappeared. Awhile later, I saw her repeat that with another baby. Later, I tapped on the steps with a broom handle and saw her come squeezing out from in between the steps and the porch foundation. As you can see, the bottom of the steps has only a 3" space and the top has 3 1/8". They must really be able to suck their guts in. Out here, I can't feed my Tomato plants fish emulsion or they get torn up. Same in my backyard in town. Had some damage there last summer. This week, I had a big Raccoon out in the daytime up on my porch. I rousted it. They have busy hands. Grrr!

Gosh, stratcat , I'm glad I am not in your shoes! I feel so sorry for those raccoon mamas and their cute babies, seems like they pick some really bad places to stash their brood. They are so hard to get rid of and so destructive and poopy! Every year it seems a family moves into my sister's free standing garage/barn, either in the ceiling or behind the wall boards. She has a neighbor that will trap them for her, but it takes a while to know if they got them all. They left a mountain of poop in a ceiling area that was a terrible mess to clean up.

I know raccoons are only doing what they have been doing for millions of years and we are in their territory, but what a nuisance they can be. Our state law says they can only be live trapped and moved less than a quarter mile from the capture spot...or euthanized as a pest.

I am glad not to have raccoon problems. Be careful with their poop because it can carry pathogens transmissible to humans. Wear gloves and a respirator if cleaning it up indoors. I occasionally find some in my yard and use a plastic bag to pick it up and I dispose of it in the trash. I can tell it's raccoon because it is totally black.
I can not use any fish emulsion or bone meal, not because of raccoons, but because skunks will dig it up. I use feather meal which is all Nitrogen if I need anything for my tomatoes. My soil tests show excess of all other nutrients.

My big nephew just took this picture of four Raccoon cuties that came out from under the steps. Haven't seen their Mom lately. I don't want to, but I'll have to get out the live traps and relocate them. They're pretty small now, so later.

stratcat, Your pole dancer made me laugh. We had a coon family for a while. Mom and 3 adorable little bandits. They would also climb up on out bird feeders and steal seeds. Wasn't half as funny when they pooped on top of the feeders >,<
