Not much on hot chili but sweet peppers add a nice flavor.

Husband is a hot pepper hater, so I can only use sweet peppers and adjust chili powder to get any heat at all.

I make and can chili all the time. I only use sweet peppers as hubby doesn't like the heat. But still yummy

I like a bit (a small bit) of heat more than chili powder provides. But I usually get that by carefully adding cayenne powder to taste once I have the other flavors balanced to my liking.

If you don’t blister your throat, you didn’t make chili.
I’m teasing of course, but I don’t think I’d want sweet peppers in chili. Cayenne yes, sweet peppers? Nah, I’m gonna have to back on that. Sheeesk….you yanks and your sugar cravings. LAUGHING.
I’m messing with y’all…Mostly.

The nearest large town has an annual Fire Dept. chili feed every fall. Some members read the gardening column I wrote in the local newspaper about the hot peppers I grew. They contacted me for a few peppers to add to the Firehouse Chili. I took them six or eight (I think they were Ghost or Fatallii or something along those lines...well over 1 million schoville heat units) I warned them to only use the peppers sparingly, maybe one or two at most for a big pot. We went back later to take part in the fund raiser and asked how the hot, spicy chili was going over. The answer was, "We had to throw the hot one out because it was burning the mouth and lips of people who tried it."
They pulled a Moose and put in five peppers because if I said one or two, four or five would be better. The replacement batch used the one pepper left over and only the bravest enjoyed that batch. Danged Yankees can't handle the heat.

Yeah I have a bag of Chocolate Habaneros to do something with. I make a barbecue sauce with them that I call Dante's Inferno. The recipe calls for 2 or 3 regular habaneros but Chocolate Habaneros are roughly twice as hot. It does well with 2 CH but once I tried 4 and created paint stripper.

Ok, next question is, i'm canning kidney beans for chili and was wondering if you think/know if I could add chili powder to the beans before canning?
