I don't feel like doing anything is the yard or garden. Every year about this time it takes a huge effort just to get out of the house. This year seems to be worse than before. I have not even mowed the grass for a couple of weeks. The lawn even seems to be tired and has not grown an inch since the last mowing. Cleaning up the garden space needs to be done but there are all kinds of excuses why that chore has not started. Tomorrow I have to dig about twenty trees to take to our son's vacation home in south central Iowa. That will be the first physical labor I have done in weeks.
We did visit a Wal-Mart yesterday where they had a close-out sale on Miracle-Gro potting soil for $3 for a 1 cubic foot bag. At half price I bought eight bags and will go back in a few days for another ten or so.
I would guess from the low volume of posts everyone is in the winding down mode. I feel wound-down rather than winding. Hopefully my attitude will get better; I hate being an old grump.

paulf , I hear you and it gets worse every year. Less energy and desire to get out there and get anything done. Leave it til tomorrow, but then another reason comes along to put it off again. Creaky bones everywhere don't help. Cold weather is here now (50's for high's this week) and windy and rainy, so the temptation to just read a book or take extra naps is great. My goal this fall is to actually get some leaves raked up and shredded and tilled into the raised beds now that about 1/3 to 1/2 of them have fallen. If only it wasn't so windy. But that gives me a good excuse to stay inside and catch up with my reading. Of course, there is lots of housework and closet cleaning that needs to be done inside, but that gets put off as well until the snow flies.

paulf, I have felt that this year more than ever. Yet....I decided to expand the garden. I'm determined to stay young through gardening as long as possible. Maybe it's worse for you this year since you had the bad experience with the straw. Next year will be better!

This is the time of the year that I most feel like doing nothing. I have things to do, outside as well as inside, but no desire or inclination to get moving. Honestly, if I could, I would hibernate until spring. Unfortunately I wasn't born an Ursidae, and I'm sure that sleeping for 6 months straight would not be socially acceptable. paulf, be careful with that Miracle Grow soil. It almost killed many of my plants. To this day that stuff is still affecting the growth of many vegetables, including some carrots that I sowed in August just to see how they would do. I filled 2 buckets with new, locally made potting soil and one bucket with the Miracle Grow Organic mix. The carrots in the Miracle Grow mix are super short, like 2 inches at most. The others are over 10 inch tall. All seeds germinated quickly but those in the MG mix are just not growing. Needless to say, I will never use that stuff again.
