All the leaves in the yard (all oak leaves) got shredded, hauled to the garden and tilled them into the soil. My fifty year old Sears root-tiller started right up tilled half the garden and then froze up. At first I thought it was the belt drive, then discovered that the pull cord would not budge the engine. I took the starter mechanism off, wrenched the bolt that connects to the engine and sprayed a whole bunch of W-D40 into a hole in the bolt that connects to the inner workings. After a half hour of taking things apart, oiling them up and putting them back together, the old relic...the tiller not me, although I need a little oiling up every once in a while...began to turn over again.
After a few fits and starts, the two of us old guys finished up with the fall till. Now next spring or whenever it is needed the other old guy better start.
On another topic, I have gone through my tomato seed inventory and everything dated from 2015 to 2019 will be on the "inventory reduction block" for this year's give-away if there is any interest. Again, no cost to anyone who will take some seeds off my hands. My stamp, my envelope and my thanks for getting rid of around fifty varieties. My thought is to begin after Christmas. Any thoughts or should I just toss them onto the compost pile? Some older seeds germinate, other do not. No guarantees. This year there are some pretty good varieties. As I dwindle so should the collection. If anyone has a special variety they are looking for I would be open to early bird offers. Maybe a PM would work best for that.
In January my selection for this year's crop will be made and all else is fair game.

So glad I am a no-till gardener!... I don't think I would be able to put up with a temperamental tool! The only powered device in my possession is a self-propelled mulching mower, a fairly simple and reliable machine, and yet for the second time this year, the pull string that starts the engine managed to break. Luckily I was just finished with garden work for 2023.

They just don’t make pull cords like they used to. My fifty year old tiller is still on its first. I also have a self propelled mower. Mine goes into gear and pulls me along. Great for mowing the hills my yard has.

That made me giggle. There have been time I bought brand new seeds and they did nothing I am curious as to what you have!
