Maybe some of you all have a recipe you would like to share for homemade things you use to keep the bugs away or kill them.

I'm looking for one for aphids. I found one in an old gardening book I have, but it calls for garlic oil-which I do not have, but I can make it. Any thing else?

I also put a 6" sprig of rosemary, 4 cloves, and a tb of coriander seeds (things I have seen in commercial organic mixes) in my concoction, along with the usual 4 cloves garlic and 6 or so hot peppers (depending on the types), plus about 4 tb oil to a qt of water in my VM, blend it about 2 min. (when it starts turning warm), then strain it through a very fine strainer, and dilute this to about a gallon, and add a tb of KHCO3, along with 1/2 tsp of yucca extract (ThermX 70 - a spreader/slicker, also great for emulsifying). Works on just about any bugs, plus the KHCO3 is good for fungus diseases.
Leave out the oil if the weather is too warm - commercial oil sprays always say not to use if over 90º.

Thanks, Pepperhead-that sounds like an awful lot of work just to spray 2 plants! (lol). I'm lazier than that. I don't know what a VM is, don't have a strainer other than a colander, don't know what KHCO3 is and no Yuccas around my house.

Cat,
KHCO3 is potassium bicarbonate, which is used in combo with oil spray to fight fungal diseases. You can also use baking soda, but it has sodium, which is of no use to the plants.
The VM is the vitamix (my lazy way of typing it in!), and you can use any blender. You can also use a paper towel to stain the stuff out, as long as it is a bounty, or another brand that doesn't dissolve upon contact with water!
You can use a drop or two of dish detergent for an emulsifier, but it doesn't do as well as the thermX70 to make the stuff stick. That stuff is great, and a quart lasts me several years, as it treats 384 gal., using only 1/2 tsp./gal.

ok-that was a big lesson! Thanks for the info! I washed all of the leaves on my Yellow Datura which was covered & I do mean COVERED with aphids 2 days ago. Used very soapy water and a rag to clean every leaf. This morning- it is covered with them again! They're getting in the eggplants now, that are planted about 20 -30 feet away from the Datura! ARGGGH

I use a Citrus Spray. I boil grapefruit rinds. Strain and spray this on the plants. You can also add garlic to the mix if you like. This repels the insects.
If you have many on a plant, spray with soapy water on the entire plant including the undersides of the leaves. Keep is wet for 5 minutes. This will suffocate the insects. Sometimes I use Hartz Flea and Tick shampoo for dogs. This works very well. Rinse and use the citrus spray to repel them.
I hope that this works for you.
