Can someone tell me which one(s) are soft neck or hard neck? These are some of the bulb I bought on eBay. Maybe not the best idea... ;D. I don't know the varieties of any of them, but the ones tha have the necks that are lying down are soft neck? This will be my first attemp at growing garlic. They do need to be planted before the first frost? Thanks for any info, tips or advice.

First two pictures are hardnecks and the type would probably be purple stripe. Third picture is definitely a softneck. Not many of those have color but those which do are usually darned good ones for taste.
For planting, plant individual cloves with the tips an inch below the surface and about 8" apart. Time to plant is 1 September for Zone 3. Add 15 days per zone through Zone 8.

So, you are saying I should plant these about the middle of November? Thanks for the help!

You must be down in Zone 8 to come up with 15 November date and that would be correct. They can be planted earlier or later but that 15 days per zone is a close rule-of-thumb to follow.

The ones just above the last pic look just like Russian Redstreaks which are medium sharp in flavor and the color of the thin striping looks purple, why the red in the name? Beats me and they are a hardneck. The other choice could be a Korean Red, same basic appearance but very hot and spicy...taste a clove and find out! The Purple striped is not hot but it is a strong garlic flavor and the striping on these in your pic is very thin and defined. Just a thought... Do write the seller you got these from and ask for positive identification. You should always always know just what you are planting, smart to find out! Garlic...yummy always!
