Well, it's time to try a new bean for canning. Not being a fan of Kentucky wonder, will be trying blue lake, contender, and duke. For the yellow bean, it will be golden rod for canning and soleil for eating. Any thoughts on any of the. Canning beans. The soleil is a favorite in my garden for fresh eating.

Roma II, it's a flat italian style bush bean. It's real productive and you can fill the freezer or pantry before it gets too hot to pick beans.

For dilly beans, grow Striped Bunch. They are hands down the best dilly bean around. This is a variety I got from Brook Elliott about 8 years ago. It is a true half runner bean that can be grown like bush beans but is a bit more productive if grown on a short trellis 4 or 5 ft tall.
Emerite works pretty well for general purpose canning of a commercially available variety and can be used for dilly beans too. Blue Marbutt is an excellent full flavored bean for canning and fresh snaps. I got a 3 color bean from my Grandma Roberts that has excellent production and is an excellent bean for canning. Flavor is a bit sweeter and similar to Blue Lake. I sent seed to Sandhill Preservation for 2014 so if you can wait a couple of weeks, you can order them. Glenn only has about 3 quarts of seed so order early if you want them.

I like the blue lake for fresh eating and canning. I tried some sort of purple pole bean last year and they were stringy and tough.

Fusion turned me onto Musica Romanos several years ago and it's my favourite green bean for anything really. It's got a very vigorous pole habit, so trellising them is a must, but it's hugely prolific and very early, just as he said it would be. Mom sent me my first seeds from Renee's garden, but it's an OP bean, so I've been able to save my seed and re-grow ever since. I've trailed a few other romano types over the years, but I always go back to Musica being my favourite. The pods get very long if you don't pick every day, but they don't toughen up until the beans inside are fully formed. I trim them to fit the jars I use and then use the trimmings in minestrone or just sauté in garlic and olive oil.
