there are 4 main kinds of squash, they will not cross with each other, but things from the same of each group will cross more details here www.seedsave.org/issi/904/experienced.html#anchor011I plan on growing butternut as a summer squash next year, and leaving all what I can't eat to be a winter squash

Is 1/2 mile close? Because that is how far squash can cross pollinate and less than that you can get funny squash if you save the seeds.

I like the funny shaped ones, they still taste fine and the seeds work just fine for more squash it seems like they have better DNA that way anyway

I can grow two patches that are that far apart and plan to do so next year. I'm going to grow two from each family. Because I want to grow halloween pumpkins and sweet dumpling, I don't grow zucchini. We don't eat much zucchini anyway and don't miss it. Next year I am growing the moschata that I grew this year: upper ground sweet potato squash and I am adding butternut. I can also add the pale gray Hopi squash and grow both it and the black Hopi squash maximas. I still need seeds for two different mixta (cushaw) but might be getting some in a trade this week.
