Yesterday, at BJs, we bought a box of Splendido grape tomatoes. I have to say that, for a store-bought tomato, these are very, very good.

Well then_____here is a question...can you quickly dry some of the seeds from that grape tomato and winter sow them do you think it would work?

Coppice, It's amazing the amount of things I can juggle, but that's because over the years I've gradually added to my work load. I thank you for your thoughtfulnes and compassion--that means a lot to me ;-) MVNewf, It was on my mind to save some of the seeds--with a sani-scrub it doesn't take long, just thirty minutes. Then it would take about a week for them to completely dry--my house is not damp and my office is toasty. These hybrid cherry toms can be WSed--any tom can be as long as the seeds are viable. (But, with any WS tomato, being able to mature before frost sets in is the key to success. I'm in zone seven and can WS most any tomato and have an abundance of ripe fruits.) I've grown out Campari from Sunset and found them viable and reliable--they are so similar to the parent plant that I suspect they are dehybridized--stable. There is profit in stability so, that being said, I have no reason to think that Splendido is infertile, and I too think that the fruits will be very similar to those I save seeds from. I start most of my toms in February, I haven't even thought yet about what I will sow, I do have some USDA seed stock that I will be sowing, but the rest is still a guess. I think I can sow some if I remember--it's not a matter of having room here because what I don't myself grow here I donate to a charity sale. So, I do believe that if I sow Spendido they will sprout, and if I grow them here I expect they will be similar to the toms I save seeds from and like any grape or cherry tomato, they will crop abundantly. Splendido is a greenhouse tomato, I expect it will show some resistance to foliar diseases--like many greenhouse tomatoes do. All this is pie-in-the-sky until I do it, but when I do it I will know if my assumptions are on target. And here's the sani-scrub info--just click on Lil Scrubber to advance the photos and info. www.wintersown.org/wseo1/CleanTomatoSeeds.htmlOr download the pdf to print out a copy for yourself: wintersown.org/wseo1/YourChoiceTomatoSASE/Learn%20to%20Save%20Tomato%20Seeds%20300.pdfT

LOL. And thank you.
Well, everybody does it their own way. A few years back I went to an AgNIC conference in Mississippi. MSUCARES was so kind and generous, and they are just so smart and brilliant people--southern hospitality is heart and soul to them. After the conference everyone was as deeply impressed as I was. One of the conference directors did encourage us to write a thank you, which we all would do anyway, but she added--send a hand-written letter, not a typed one or an email. It made a lot of sense to me and that's what I do, it's more caring. WinterSown.Org exists not because of me, but because of Winter Sowers and tomato enthusiasts that have helped me, and I do profoundly appreciate all they have done.
BTW, I saves some of those seeds this morning.
