Maybe it's not on topic, but this year I'm growing four potato varieties from seed tubers, all from Denmark: Asparges (a yellowish fingerling), pink fleshed fingerlings from my mother's garden, Marabel (early) and Ditta (mid season), the first three have been planted already, and Ditta would as well, a trench is ready, but the weather has been too bad for gardening. I will also grow TPS (mostly from Tom Wagner), but the plants are frost sensitive and must wait until the latter part of May or early June before being planted outside.

I'm growing Desiree...but it's only because they're supposed to grow well in TX. Hope they have a good yield...didn't even think about that...hahaha!

Ok, taters have sprouted and I didn't trench these, so when is a good time to start "hilling" them?

Bang for the buck: Kennebec and Red Pontiac. Just good all around potatoes that have many uses. I tried Irish Cobbler last year and the yield was okay, not great, just okay.
I start hilling when the plants are about 6" tall. I don't want to smother them when they're young. My grandmother, who planted all of our potatoes, told me to step on the dirt when you hill the plants in order to compact the dirt. It might be passe advice now but when your Polish grandmother tells you to do something, you do it!

Thanks for the help, here is a pic I took yesterday, so me thinks they are a little small yet for hilling?

This and the previous week I sowed some TPS (Unknown Blue 2009 F2 from wmontanez, and some from Tom Wagner: 4332008 F1 (mostly Skagit Valley Gold), Red White and Blue F2?, Pig Knuckles F2?, Orangutan F2?, Pokhipsie F2?, Mazama Blue F2?, Agria x Blue Blood Russet F1), but not all, as I still have Durgan's Russian Blue and Tom Wagner's Diamond Toro, Gold Caesar, Kiva, Land Races, Quarter Master, Redder Blood, and didn't sow them. If I had more space, I'd probably sow all, but some have to wait.

My wintersown TPS are all russet family. So far they're ok, but are slow growing.
DLD once the greens are like 6" tall you can start hilling them. Leave a little bit of green peeking out of the hills.

I have a few potatoes out..mostly filling in spots that needed something there. Next year I hope to plant more...they're such pretty hardy plants and I just LOVE potatoes!

All of my potates from seed potatoes are above ground now, and I hope they'll produce berries (and tubers).

watermellonman, do you always have good luck with the potatoes you buy from the store? I have heard that they might not come up and produce. thanks Errol

It seems to me that I've read that store-bought potatoes are sometimes treated so they won't sprout. A couple times I've planted them and they've worked.

I had good harvests of Purple Viking and Keuka Gold this year. The CPBs got after the Rose Finn Apple real bad and the early Norlands sort of bad. They left the Keukas alone until the very end.
