My hands are killing me! As you know I work on school buses, and in the winter my hands hurt bad, even with gloves on trying to keep the paws warm,do you have a secret, not involving pain meds that works for you?

Concentrated cherry juice is supposed to help with pain/inflammation. It is available online. We've purchased it from a source in Traverse City, MI (a few hours north of us), as Traverse City is known for its cherries. The concentrate is a little expensive, and be warned that it will make you PUCKER!!! VERY tart. We'd take it a teaspoon at a time. Not sure if this will help you or not, but I definitely wanted to mention it.

For my sore guitar hands, I add Tart Sour Cherry Concentrate to my cup of green tea and honey. I'm having one right now!

great idea Stratcat!!!
on a different note... do you ever experience numbness in your hands from playing gtr? A couple weeks back, I'd been playing a lot more than normal (rehearsals and such for an extra performance we had) and found my left hand getting a little numb. When it did, i just took some time to stretch a bit and that seemed to do the trick. You ever deal with that? Any remedies?

I use arnica (herb) tablets to reduce arthritic inflammation. There is also an arnica salve/gel/cream which can be applied topically, which can be very helpful.

One can also eat dried tart cherries. They can be added to your oatmeal or snacked on.
One caveat: As Dogwoman has posted about getting too much sugar in juicing, check into the sugar content of these products. They could be concentrated and high.
Nofeargardener: I'm still thinking. I'll get back to you.

I forgot all about Arnica Gel!!! VERY good stuff. Can be purchased from your local health food store. I'm a fan of the gel rather than the oil. Kind of expensive, but is good for stiffness, swelling, and even bruising! All natural too. ;D

Yeah, I've experienced some numbness, tingling, pain in my fretting hand over the years. Did lots of shaking my hand in between numbers. I called my brother tonight and he has used RICE-Rest Ice Compression Elevation-on his guitar hand with success when it messed up. For the last two months, I've been rehearsing guitar loads. I play lots of short sessions with a little rest in between. My hands are doing OK. In the spring when I'm planting loads of tomato, pepper and flower starts, I usually wake up mornings with numb hands. Not much guitar playing then; rest those hands. Unless I'm practicing bottleneck...

For joint pain, I'm also taking Glucosamine Chondroitin with success. I forgot to mention these.

Strat, how long was it after beginning the Glucosamine Chondroitin before you actually had a noticable improvement? Not necessarily a huge improvement mind you, but enough that you realized it was doing some good?

Strat, how long was it after beginning the Glucosamine Chondroitin before you actually had a noticable improvement? Blue, I'm having a hard time remembering 12 years ago or so. Mom says it took her three months before it kicked in. It didn't take me that long to get relief for my sore knees. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Hubs just started to take it about a month ago and he says he thinks he's noticing an improvement? He has been eating dried cherries daily for about 18 months now, but they are not helping much anymore, so onto Glucosamine.

Strat, the Cherry Juice can't hurt (npi). But DH needed more relief than just cherries were giving at this point. Pretty sure the Glucosamine Chondroitin is working because I have to remind him now to take them. If he was in a lot of pain, he wouldn't forget

Hi, Blue. Of course I had to look up npi. One of the Glucosamine Chondroitin products is Osteo Bi-Flex. Mom takes that one. It has additional ingredients, including Boswellia Serrata. I take Boswellia on the side. Glad to hear DH is getting relief.

I seem to recall there being Boswellia in another over the counter Arthritis remedy he took about 5 years ago? It helped somewhat but was price prohibitive and I haven't seen it advertised for a while so perhaps others felt the same way.
Thanks Strat!

And people say that American pharmaceuticals are more expensive than those here in Canada? I can't believe the price of that!

After Traverse City had the high 80's in March followed by hard freezes this Spring, the Tart Cherry crop took a hit. I saw it coming, but I didn't stock up on my Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate. The price went from $16 to $19; an 18.75% increase. Ugh!

Yes, the cherry crops were badly damaged here as well. Keep taking that Boswellia BTW it just didn't work for Hubs. He's had to resort to heavy duty prescription anti inflammatories. New Doctor had xrays taken and his hands are full of bone spurs from years of heavy labour jobs.

Well, I've found this thread enlightening and I thank y'all. I've had arthritis/severe pain in my left (nondominant) thumb since the beginning of the year (I suspect from overusage @ Christmas with making gifts, etc). Can't take prescription anti-inflammatories (GI upset) and the orthopod is champing @ the bit to inject the joint (I think NOT! He'll have to catch me first, lol)

OGB, Doc only kept Hubs on the heavy duty arthritis meds for two weeks for the same reason. Instructed him to take Tylenol Arthritis unless the pain is too severe. I really don't like the idea that he is to take painkillers regularly, however, we seem to have exhausted all other avenues.
Good luck with your thumb. I had to quit crochet classes for that very same reason. Took me 40 years to learn to crochet and now I can't do it because of excruciating pain? Geez.

Dr. Oz recommends devil's claw for arthritis pain at 500mg daily to help reduce inflammation and pain.
For muscle pain he also recommends using a castor oil rub, wrap the area in plastic wrap and use heating pad, my neice has tried this and swears it works.

Desertrat, I tried to find that article online at Dr Oz. No luck?? Found some other arthritis suggestions there though. But Hubs is going to a Specialist soon. We are looking into Acupuncture as a way to relieve his pain.

www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2474/5/6Hi BLRH, Have you investigated SAMe? The link above is to a study of the use of a bio-active natural compound that is produced in the body through metabolism of nutrients (meaning a well balanced-diet). During the aging process, this natural production slows down, and in some cases, such as environmental or stress-induced circumstances, there is not enough of the active compound, S-adenosylmethionine, to go around. This substance is used by every cell in the human body, and is instrumental in maintenance of DNA, liver functions, nerve conductivity, and many more processes. There are more than 20 years of research analyzing the effectiveness of pain and inflammation relief with SAMe. Most doctors have yet to acknowledge it's usefulness. I've been struggling with this problem with my hands for years, but now have additional challenges with spine, hips, and knees. It's been only 3 weeks since I've begun using SAMe, but already I'm seeing actual reduction in swelling, pain, and a definite increase in strength. For the first time in a long time, I can jump out of bed in the morning and move without first "testing" to see how strong/weak my hips and knees are. Normally, I need a little support from the furniture or walls for the first hour or two before I'm steady enough on my own. My right hand is almost worthless now. Since I was a little girl, I've been able to crochet and knit sweaters, afghans, and lace. Now I can't even sew a missing button onto my shirt. It boggles my mind that I've struggled with this so long, and have gotten nowhere. Mabe, in 6 months or so, I'll be able to wear that shirt again. I'd say it's definitely worth looking into SAMe. I hope you find that "something" that can help your husband. The pharma solutions do not impress me. Good luck to you (all), and I hope my experience is of some benefit.
