I 've been wanting to grow Mexican Oregano for awhile and cant find a seed source. I guess I'm wondering why no one sells seeds for this variety.

It's very scarce but you can buy small plants online which are basically rooted cuttings.

There are actually several species sold as Mexican Oregano, depending where you live (here, or in Mexico as well). It is needed for many Mexican recipes. If you use a Mediterranean variety, your enchiladas may taste like pizza/spaghetti sauce.

I strictly use it for Mexican, TexMex style recipes/cooking. Can't live without it for salsa. Thanks for the info Trudi, I'll search for plants. Hopefully, once grown, it winters over. If not, it's worth starting over every yr. Rintintin, you only make the mistake of substituting Mediterranean in Mex cuisine once in a lifetime. When you said that, I can actually still taste that mistake.
Thanks,
Buck

Richters Herbs carries Mexican Oregano. And Sorellina gets to shop there in person!

Thanks stratcat, and rintintin. I'm a zone 5 but have to try at least once.

If you can keep one plant alive through the winter, you can take cuttings in the spring.

Ciao all-
I've spoken to folks at Richters about this. Apparently, Mexican Oregano is only propagated by cuttings and seeds are not available. That's why you've had difficulty finding a source. We get a couple plants from Richters every spring. It's usually a birthday outing for me as my birthday (and daylilydude's) is in mid-May.
