I have always had hard times growing summer squash. I always get a few great looking fruit and then they die. I didn't even try last year. I've never been able to find any squash bugs in the plants and always use fungicide but they alway die soon after the first fruits. I would love to be able to grow them. Any ideas about what is happening to my squash plants?

Borers, maybe? We've had problems with them in the past.

I battle this problem also, some years the spring squash is abundant and some years its pitifully, its not always a bug problem with mine most often its to wet conditions due to spring rains. One year I grew yellow spring squash in 5gallon containers only because the area I was going to use I hadn't got around to digging over. That year I had a great crop so I found more containers and planted up some zucchini, only one plant in each container, had a good crop from those ,cant say I will grow in containers always but its ok in an emergency when I haven't dug over an area.

insufficient pollination...break out a paintbrush Better yet: borrow some bees! (Most beeks are happy to have a new placement area.) Honeybees are OK with squash, but mason bees, bumblebees, and squash bees (it's a local nick-name - I forget the true name) are better pollinators for squash. I keep about a dozen hives on a local pumpkin farm and have noticed that the bigger bees seem to be more successful with these as well -- but my girls make still good honey from the pumpkin blossoms!

I don't think even paint brushes or bees can make a dead squash plant produce fruit.

Bob if you have room try strawbales, i have noticed over the past few years double output, plus had no die-offs very easy to do also.
