This has probably already been covered but here goes anyway. What kind of pumpkin is recommended for pies. The other thing I'm going to do next year is plant pumpkins, squash, and watermelons as a cover crop around corn and peas. What do you think? ;D Man I've got lots of questions!!!

Bill when I had small ones still at home Pie pumpkins sort of worked. As much as ammunition for tossing on Halloween evening, as they were for pies. There are several cultivars out there that make just about 1-for-1, IE one pumpkin equals one pie.
Since the sprouts have grown and flown, I've been using butternut squash for the same utilitarian end and about one-for-one.
So you can grow a pie pumpkin, but you don't have to. I don't think anybody will notice.

I used what's called Sugar Pumpkins. They're sweeter than regular pumpkins, thicker area of flesh and not as big as halloween pumpkins. They make an amazing pie! Actually I made the amazing pie. The pumpkin just laid there and made faces at me.

I grew a lot of pumpkins this year and baked a lot of pie! Hands down the best is Winter Luxury Pie. The texture is better than Sugar Pie and they are nice sized, prolific and pretty.

BTW, vining crops will not work around peas and corn because you won't be able to get in easily to pick the peas and corn. (Especially not for me because I am very allergic to squash plants.) I have done this before!
