I am thinking about trying to grow a "small size" cantaloupe on trellis. Has anyone had experenice with this and what type of cantaloupe would be best for growing on a trellis? thanks

I have grown 'Green Nutmeg', 'Charentais' 'Banana' and even 'Armenian Cucumber' on trellis. Found that the 'Banana' and 'Armenian Cucumber' got a little too heavy for the nylon mesh trellis. Even if wire trellia was used, the fruits still a little too heavy and fall off before ripe. Possible solution is 6-8 inch wide stips of torn T-shirt, tied to stake or mesh, at both end, to help support the weight

Always grew musk melons vertically, soon as the fruit would appear I popped it into the foot of an old pair of tights, cut way up at the top of the leg and tied that part to the fence, tights are pantie hoes here,I'm to old to change the terms I use,any how that's how I grew my melons as I didn't have the ground space back then. Dont remember the name of the melon but it was a musk.

Last year some vines of muskmelon grew up, in and around my tomato cages and I used the same idea as cornishwoman but used old t-shirts I had laying around I used as rags. No pantyhose (tights) around here. The melons were great without bugs and dirt to spoil them. With the support of the t-shirt, they grew very large without breaking off at the stem.

Over the years I've grown the NH and Minnesota series of mellons and lopes up trellis'.
Head high is more than tall enough. On a cold year waist high is enough.
My supply of things to fasten mellon to trellis was onion bags.

My cages were 5 feet tall and the vines covered the cages, but the melons all seemed to be between 3 and 4 feet.

Last year I has petit gris de renne and green machine climb the 4 ft. chicken wire fence, as the vines got longer I just wove them through the wire so they'd stay put and they did fine. I didn't support them as the melons didn't get that big. Did that with armenian cukes too.

I am going to try and grow some melons for the first time this year. Great ideas on how to support them. Thanks.

FWIW, for me musk mellons and cantalopes slip off the vine easily. A net bag (or nylon) tied to trellis was a needed support.
