Just wanted to see a little input on this age old method of growing-planting, by using the Old Farmers Almanac. I know that many of the baby-boomers still grow by this, but some of us that were raised in the 60s and 70s, might not? Is this a dying age old fashion?

I have tried couple of times but really cant tell the difference. My Granny always planted by the signs, she always had a large beautiful garden but who knows she might have had it not planting by the signs..

When I had my beef farm I always went by the signs when working cattle, especially when it came to weening and cutting the bulls. The calves seemed to a lot less distressed. As for gardens I don't know first season, but I think I'll try it.

I use it as a base/starting point. Then, from there, calculate differences based on personal experience, yearly weather, etc..

they have wonderful long term weather predictions, 85% correct, they do it by looking at the sun spot cycles, and it really helps to know what to plant when looking at the long term weather and I use it to give me ratios of what to plant so that I am more likely to have more plants do well with what they weather will be doing I plant when I have the chance, no sun signs there... I don't care if my plants have the sun sign of picies or cancer or virgo, or what ever...

i follow it and do not know if it makes a difference. there must be something to it for people to follow it for centuries. the effects of the moon on people is usually found in the matter of births and deaths. persons working in emergency rooms say there in an increase in admittances because of the goofy acts by some people. jon

I also find the little book confusing...but the year I used it, seemed like I was a better gardener. Lol. Is it just me or are the planting charts hard to find?

I haven't used it but I wonder if vege pests would be less of a problem if I did. Wonder if moon phases have to do with insects mating, hatching, eating crops and so on.
