Whats your favorite, mine was Charleston Gray, but I'm gonna try Orange Tendersweet that has orange meat this next year. Some people tell me that the ones with orange meat are the sweeter ones?

I've heard that as well. Never tried an orange meated one yet. The only watermelons I've ever had success growing up here were Moon & Stars. I did try the long version in 2007 and again this past summer, but only one fruit and gues what? It was round I might order the Hambly watermelon this year. It's an Ozark Heirloom offered by Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds for 2011. I like their local heirloom offerings. Had success with a couple of them, namely Jerry's German Giant tomato and the Kansas melon.

You're lucky to be able to grow large watermelons, Rich. Up here, mine have never gotten bigger than golfball size, so I've switched to growing canteloupes. They're much easier to get to a good size in our short season.

I had, but was unable to plant a couple different (cantalope and watermellon) of the NH midget series from Sandhill, Maybe now that I'm landed where I might be able to grow without interference I can actually get a crop in...
SE-OH has'ta have a longer summer'n lakes region of cow-hampshire.

Orangeglo didn't do well for me here, nice huge melons but the texture was less than stellar and the huge seeds were not to my liking, I just don't think they like the PNW...on the other hand, Blacktail does fantastic here, nice fresh clean crisp flesh and very sweet.

Well here in zone 4, actually we are an hour and 40 minutes from zone 3, these type melons don't do as well, and I too like the Charleston Gray.. Last summer though, we had EXCELLENT weather for warmer weather crops, if only we had of known what the temps would have been we would have grown some other varieties.. but all we planted was Moon & Stars, from seed I had thought to be too old, got them several years back. My wife could tell you how many we harvested, I can't remember, more than a few though. For those who haven't visited my forum, here is a pic of one of them, this one was 21 lbs. had another that I believe was 28...Big for here, good for any zone!

Wow, Moon & Stars melons in zone 4?? Maybe I'll have to put a couple in a big barrel on the driveway. That's my only space for any additional cucurbits.

Phil, that melon looks elongated? Is it Long Moon & Stars from Glenn Drowns? I had a packet of those from B/C back in about 2006, but they didn't grow for me. Could just have been the seed, because the round Moon & Stars have been successful for me in Zone 5.

I think a five gallon bucket would be too small for watermelon, I think a 15 gl one would work though.

yellow melons lol just a short story....we have 10 grandchildren and all cannot wait to go to Nana and Papas for magic melons on the 4th of July.....my grands are all being raised in the city or on military bases and dont know much about farming when young...but all come home for the 4th of july...it is/was my Daddys birthday and always a big family get together after a big bbq in the evening before fireworks out come the magic melons......a few fancy magic words are said over them and at the end are make this red melon turn the color of the full moon...Tap it 3 times with a knife...then with their breaths held they wait till it is cut and is it.....is it......yes its yellow.........most of my grands are old enough now they know mellons come in red and yellow but its still a tradition to open the magic mellon at Nanas and Papas.....

Grandkids or melon seeds? had to ask....LOL My honey is off to gather a grandboy for a 4 day weekend nd boy does that make me happy he lives in warenburg Mo. so we meet half way to get them....Caden is my garden buddy and you can bet 2 things will happen this weekend.....my seeds will get planted and Caden alone will drink at the very least a gallon of raw milk every day by his self.....he says he has to drink enough to last him till he can get back to Okla cuz his Mom and Dad buy 2% colored water from the store...he will get about 3 miles from the house and will start shedding his city clothes and pull on a pair of shorts and a tshirt and hit the ground running for the garden....he picks up a handful of dirt and smells it and grins....then he comes to me for a hug.....I do believe its in his genes
