Hi all I joined awhile back, but have not posted anything yet, my health problems caught up with me along with a few computer problems that still plague me. Last summer was a killer for most of my tomatoes, nearly 80% bit the dust as TMV, Blight and mildew along with spider mites and a Host of other insects took over the garden which was the worst in years in fact everything took a hard hit the worst was squash which was a 100% kill so they will not be planted again for awhile. My eggplants which I really like grew to a foot tall and just sat there while flea beetles ate the leaves and new growth off, I got one fruit off one out of ten plants, so I need to look at new varieties that are more resistant to bug damage. I try to be as organic as I can and not spray pesticides everywhere, even though I really wanted too. We had high humidity from spring till late summer which just made it worse, mildew and then spider mites finished most of the weak hybrids that boasted several resistance to blight and tmv. My best hold outs where my Hawaiian Pineapple tomatoes, while my melons succumbed to mildew and gummy stem, So no more melons this coming year either, Okra was a keeper as the plants laughed of bug and blight attacks and grew to 10ft. I plan to grow them along with so new types I will be getting. Beans did great and and put out more than we could process and eat. I still have 8 quart bags in the freezer. They and my okra was this years winners as they did the over all best in the garden. My heirloom peas did well till warm weather and mildew hit, after that they just took up space. Well thats my intro, and up date. I hope every one as a great season this spring and summer. George W. Z5-6 MO.

Wild '09 was so-o-o wet and cold that the poor tomatoes hardly noticed when late blight killed every one of them. And not just in my garden but the whole northeast!
Carry on, we're rootin' for ya'.

Hi Wildseed,I can truly sympathise with you. Couple of years ago now this area had major floods, standing water for weeks, watched my beans and peas do the breaststroke out of my garden into the pasture next door. Just mother nature making sure we are paying attention.

The weather has really been something the last few years, I guess its global warming. So far we haven't had any snow yet compared to last year when we had a foot of snow already. I remember all the flooding we had last year also, I'm hoping that it will be a mild year so I can grow a good batch of peas this spring. George W.

Hello Wildseed, I could have written your post myself. The worst gardening year I'v ever had. I am in 5 area, Mo. I am amending soil now with epsom salts and peat for tomatoes. Of course a little compost. Good luck and take care of you.

i grow eggplant in low tunnels covered with spun poly row covers to protect them from flea beetles. an easy and inexpensive solution. it definitely helps to have the right variety and they like warm rich organic soil.
