Do the vines grow roots from the vines that come in contact with the soil?

No. But you will want to water all of the ground under the vine canopy because watermelon roots can grow out to 20' from the base - in soil that is not compacted.

Yes, Many watermelon vines WILL grow roots from nodes that touch the soil. It is good if they do because it allows the plant to get more water and nutrients, and grow bigger.

Yes, I think you are right. I've searched around - and found anecdotal evidence of similar results as yours at various other forums. Try as I might, I've never had any success rooting watermelon vines. It doesn't seem too common, though. None of the academic or industry publications even mention it - but they do mention rooting pumpkin/squash vines. You must have a special skill and a favorable environment. Do you have good results with them all, or are there some varieties that root more aggressive than others?
