Squirrels... friend or foe to the veggie gardener?

Well, there is one less in my garden today. Does that answer your question?

Squirrels make me wish I didn't live in city limits. Can't shoot 'em if you live in the city.

I live trap them and let them live way out in the country.

Hmmm.... I have a dozen or so here and they go nowhere near my garden! What are they eating in your garden?

they've destroyed all but one of my broccoli plants. I also had to replant about a half row of bush beans because they eat the young sprouts.
We've used a few different approaches (cayenne pepper, BB gun, pet hair, garden hose) but the one that seems to work best is our dog. They bolt out of there in a hurry when I let her out! ;D ;D ;D

I already caught a chipmunk this morning and he's going for a nice ride.

Scratch that thought. The little fella banged on the Havahart trap and made a break for it. I haven't given up.

The first year I had trouble with them, I kept finding tomatoes pulled off the plants, with one bite out of them. I trapped over 50 that year, and it has been war ever since! They also set up nest in my eaves, until I squirted in a bunch of polyurethane foam to keep them from getting back in (had to make sure they were out, first, or that would not have been good!). I keep traps out there all year, and they are pretty much gone, until one shows up from another area, to set up camp, which is why I trap so few anymore.

Yep, they do that "one bite" thing with tomatoes, and also peaches and plums. There's nothing like having them take one bite off every single peach on your tree to change your opinion of them from "cute" to "needs killing."

Hmmm.... I have a dozen or so here and they go nowhere near my garden! What are they eating in your garden? I have 7 filbert trees that they steal most of the nuts from...before there even ripe, they pick my plums and take one bite out of them as there not even ripe and then they eat all the young shoots in my garden in early spring...and now the Gophers are on the attack. I'm through being nice...it's time for the BIG GUNS!!!

I don't have a very big garden but it is in the city on my city lot.....raised beds now, tomato and pepper plants, spinach, half dozen brocolli plants, lettuce and many bird and squirrel feeders. I also put out corn cobs so maybe that is why they leave my veggies alone. Once in awhile they dig what I plant, like bulbs, but not that much. I think the feeding them over the years, (winter too) keeps them going to the feeders? they don't bother my three raspberry bushes either....I'm eating them now as fast as they ripen. they do like strawberry tho so the plants I have out are for them..... hell, they are stuck int the city just like me.

I've live-trapped 5 chipmunks at Mom's and 3 at my place. Caught the little rabbit in my yard and gave him a ride on Sunday.

Wednesday, I caught the nasty Red Squirrel at Mom's. I'm real sure he found his way into Mom's basement. It took weeks to catch him and now he's setting up housekeeping miles away.

chipmunks seem to do more damage than gray squirrels here in the strawberry and tomato patches. not sure who dug all the crocus bulbs i planted last fall. and the flying squirrels continue to find their way into the attic.

At Mom's place, I noticed one of those nasty Red Squirrels today. Spring has arrived early for him and the little troublemaker is out-and-about already. It's time to get live trap set.
