This was part of the herbal pharmacopea. Nothing in this post should replace medical advice. Speaking only as an old cripple your doctor has lotsa neeto stuff in his satchel. Sometimes its got side effects that are more burdensom than what'cher trying to mend.
Valerian' busy parts are its roots. Its easy to grow, legal, and effective for restless leg. Its draw back is it does cause drowsyness, so if you have a full 'honey-dew' list, this should be a night-time suppliment.
Valerian is a tall plant with an umble flower. Bloom is sweet enough to grow in the flower bed. (hint) It likes full sun and some watering in drouthy periods.
Seed is carrot seed shape, top sow to bed or geminating pans under cover. Collect and dry umbles after they begin to drift (set seed). Dry seed in paper bag. IMO do not bother to clean or winnow seed.
Collect roots after seed is set (year two).
Like Cilantro this herb is quite different dried or fresh. Dirty socks, yes valerian is pungent. Some folks do better with dried roots (in gel caps) ground up. Others like me, do best with this tinctured fresh. Wash roots well before use.

Can the leaves be used for sleepy tea or does it have to be just the roots? I would love to have some but it's hard to find. Would you happen to have seeds that you would be willing to trade?

Sheryl, It needs to be the roots. Johnny's Selected Seeds used to offer it. I'd be amazed if Richters didn't offer it too. Um, a Maine seed house also used to offer it *can't think of their name right now.
I don't have any seed as of this writing, but this too should pass.
