Lettuce hear your opinions! (sorry for the pun)
Have you discovered any lettuce that can handle the dog days of summer without going bitter quickly? WOuld be great to actually have a lettuce salad when the tomatos are in!

Guess I'll try the buttercrunch, I really miss lettuce after the heat hits and if this would handle it a while longer than the mix I usually grow that would be great! Thanks

I haven't found any that will take our sun/heat in the summer. I meant to try planting some late lettuce in mostly shade as an experiment but the summer got away from me. If I could extend the lettuce season even by a few weeks I'd be a happy woman! This is what I was contemplating for my 'shade' lettuce, maybe on a rolling stand of some kind where it could be moved around easily if need be.

I'm thinking of building a fairly deep self watering type planter on wheels. That way I can plant lettuce and maybe some of the other salad type veggies and roll them into shade when it's hot and in the basement kitchen when it's hot

Sounds like a plan, Billh. Skyfire Garden Seeds will have the 2014 catalog up anyday now; maybe tomorrow. Under the lettuce category, she talks of slow-bolting varieties as well as some that don't get bitter.
