junkman has sent me seeds for these (thank you junkman!) they are one that I have always wanted to try. I was wondering if anyone else has grown these and what was/is your opinion on them? And can anybody tell me how long the vines get and how many fruit per vine can I expect?

I hope they come up for you since it was older seed. Let me know if they don't for it isn't time yet here to plant them. The vines can be the ramblers, so you might have to sacrifice a little yard for them to spread. mine spread out like 15 feet. I got probably 8 to 12 squash per hill but is has a lot to do with soil fertility and pollination, but do hope they do good for you.

great to hear they have sprouted. At least I know they will now sprout for me as well, but I am going to hold off just a little while longer.

Planted two hills of PA Dutch Crooknecks the 14th of June and picked a harvest this morning. About the best winter squash I have grown. I estimate the wagon has around 100lbs in it. Should last me the winter. ![](http://i1338.photobucket.com/albums/o695/kyud8/100_3063_zps7bfc5c17.jpg)

Question about pollination & seed quality.
I have a question about plants that must be pollinated by insects. Take squash. If you have only one plant, it will have male & female flowers. The insects pollinate it, and you get fruit. You open up the ripe fruit, cook and eat it, then save the seeds.
Next spring you plant those seeds. My question is: is the resulting plant & fruit of lower quality than if you had many squash plants [of the same variety] last year and the female flowers received pollen from another plant?

I am not an authority on seed saving, but to try and answer your question I would say that if one plant is all you got, your seed will still be fine and should not diminish in quality too much with just one generation. It is said that it is best to have a minimum of six plants of one variety to insure proper genetic diversity and yes even better when you plant even more. Just try and plant more of them next year to get them back on track.

That's what I thought. Tks very much! When you buy seed from a real small seed "company" you have to wonder if they have that minimum # of plants that they collect their seed from.
