I haven't unpacked all my tree and gardening books so will have to return another day with the latin for this shrub.
Likes full sun tolerates a wide variety of soils.
The bark was the herbal part
By report semi-hardwood (taken in early spring) cuttings will propagate.
Seed is distributed with a nifty projectile system, as in it shoots seed around.
Has an interesting blossom.
Collect seed late in July before seed pods open! Replant to feild or cold stratify.
Do not dry seed (its toast if dried).
Because of either early spring or late fall blooming IMO it is a good seasonal bonsai. Leaves do not reduce ideally, so bigger specimens are preffered (by me at least).

Nice photo. I could spend a couple years turning the stump that one back into a bonsai!
