Yeah I know it is early with harvest in full swing but what better time than October to talk about planting next years patch .What ones to grow? Well I have on hand is Winter Luxury , Howden , Long Island Cheese , OL Zeb's and Field Trip Hybrid. Also have Kabocha Squash which is a Japanese pumpkin. The Giants will not be in the mix however do to space limits.I think I can get away with growing Winter Luxury and Kabocha on the fence or a trellis with support slings for each pumpkin so the weight does not snap the stem off the vine. For folks not familiar with Ol Zeb's or Field Trip here is some of the info.
105 Days. Field Trip is an appropriately named variety for anyone catering to school tours at their farm market. Field Trip produces 5-7 lb. fruit with deep orange color, moderate ribbing, and distinctive, long, well-rooted handles. The attractive, slightly flattened fruit are the ideal size for children to carry from the field and then home from school. Semi-vining plants have intermediate resistance to powdery mildew.
Ol Zeb's has a unique florescent orange color with a long wispy handle that gives it an heirloom quality. Ol Zeb's is a high yielder.
Lots of cool pumpkins out there. Two that I don't have at the moment are Wolf and Phat Jack. Like these two because they have nice big handles . There are two others I would like to try too. Mr. Wrinkles and Mrs Wrinkles.
Mr. Wrinkles is a large Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin with wrinkled and bumpy skin. It has a strong handle that can hold its heavy weight. Color: Deep orange Days To Maturity: 110 Size W x H & Weight: 20-30 lbs; 13 x 10.5
Mrs. Wrinkles
A smaller companion to Mr. Wrinkles, with deeply wrinkled ribs and a thick, nicely embedded handle. Mrs. Wrinkles was able to tolerate stress in our trials better than Mr. Wrinkles. Even with less than ideal conditions, she still developed more wrinkles! We found the height to be variable, with some attractive squattier shapes. Fruit was prolific on a very strong vine. Color: Deep orange Days To Maturity: 110 days Size W x H & Weight: 10-12 x 9-10", 20-30 lbs
No matter what pumpkins you decide on you gotta admit there is a variety for everyone.
