Is it just me or does all lettuce have the same taste? It's just when I eat lettuce in my mind I know how it's going to taste whether in a salad or on a burger. Is there a certain variety that you like and would recommend?

No, there are definitely different tastes. I grew up assuming all lettuce tasted like iceberg, because that's all Mom ever bought. When started eating out (in places that use lettuces other than iceberg), I learned that lettuce can be more than just a transport mechanism for salad dressing. So now I never grow (or buy) iceberg anymore. That's okay, I had my share as a kid!

I agree with LinFL, I was raised on iceberg lettuce. Basically no taste thats why they invented dressing . But the mixed variety of lettuces is wonderful and or use spinach. If you taste the lettuces individual you can taste a difference. Some are actually bitter. But together they are wonderful!

Though they are not lettuces, baby swiss chard leaves are also good in salads, as are a lot of the asian greens when picked at baby sizes.

I think that in general, yes, lettuce does have a similar taste, regardless of the variety. I grow several different kinds of romaine and buttercrunch, but they do still have that "lettucey" taste to them.
Spinach, Asian greens, and other greens are not lettuce so they won't have that distinctive taste.
A few years ago Lays potato chips put out a BLT potato chip. As our family sat around trying out the bag, what we all kept commenting on was that somehow they'd managed to capture the distinct lettuce flavor and put it in the chip. They were strange, and of the BLT components, it was really odd how they managed to capture the L flavored part the best.
My favorite lettuces to grow are Black Seeded Simpson and Jericho. Jericho is a Cos/Romaine lettuce with great crunch, and Black Seeded Simpson is a green leaf lettuce with more crunch than most green leafed lettuce.
