I was given a BUNCH of Jerusalem Artichoke tubers. I am excited to have these! I planted a half of a 5 gallon bucket yesterday. We ate some for dinner the other night. I washed, sliced, and fried them with the skins on in my cast iron frying pan with olive oil, sea salt, and pepper: What a treat! They were delicious as a side to the chicken and broccoli. I am going to give some tomato, pepper, and eggplant plants to the man and woman who gave me these. I hope they like some of my breeding crosses and others that are my favorites. He is a biologist/botanist, and his wife is also a biologist/ornithologist. They own a 40 acre permaculture farm. It is neat to be able to trade things with people and learn a few things in the process. My daughter is in a program called "Creek Watchers" where she is learning about water quality. We go out once a week to monitor the local watersheds and perform testing. All of our test results are sent to Virginia Department of Environmental Quality for review. Right now there are no other studies being done on the local creeks of the seaside and bay where I live. It is a good learning experience for all involved and provides VDEQ with valuable data. The "Creek Watcher's" program and another program called "Sparks" is how I came to meet the Corman's who gave me the Jerusalem Artichokes. I'll post pictures of the plants in the garden this year when they are flowering.
