I'm thinking of getting one of the pull behind spreaders and was wondering if it was a good idea to spread fertilizer at the same time as mowing the yard... 2 birds 1 stone kinda thing??

daylilydude I hate to sound like Mr. negative, but do you enjoy mowing? My personal philosophy is if I'm not feeding it or eating it, it gets minimal attention, but I hate mowing the lawn. That being said, the only problem I can see with your plan would be backing into corners or tight spots while mowing. Good luck and happy mowing.

billh, yeah I enjoy mowing... better had with them 2 new mowers and yes 4 weedeaters to go with them... lol! And the wife and I also help some elderly couples that are on a fixed income and can't afford those big lawn mowing companies to do theirs. I had thought about the corners and tight spots also, and I think I'll just hand feed those areas.

Good on you and your wife helping senior citizens, dld. As I'm not into mowing, you wouldn't see me fertilizing, heheh.

Maintaining turf is like keeping garden space in reserve. With that in mind, I hope you're not spreading herbicide and insecticides mixed in with your fertilizers. many people don't realize that clover fixes nitrogen and is very drought tolerant. Get a soil test to determine needs; unless you're starting a new lawn there's probably no need for phosphorus. And be careful not to spread phosphorus fertilizers in or near wetlands or right before a heavy rain.
That said if you have a large area a drop spreader can be efficient, and it is always better to spread smaller amounts more frequently than to put a heavy load on in one application.

I fertilize my lawn since it also means fertilizer for my gardens. Grass grows faster than some people would like but I also have a bagging mower. Whatever nutrients are taken up by the grass eventually ends up in the compost tumbler.
