Will pumpkins cross with hard winter squash or not? I do know that they apparently belong to the same family, and, indeed, a Japanese "pumpkin" is really a form of squash...for one example. Also, the "pie pumpkins" are closer to some hard winter squashes than they are to jack o lantern tasteless types.
I need to know. I'm dealing with a monster something or other here, an unintentional cross. Tks.

My answer would be....Sorry don't really know squat in this area, but I've heard they will cross! Hope others that actually know will chime in for you!

Yes, they absolutely will cross if they are in the same species. Their genus would all be Curcurbita and that would be divided into C. maxima, C. mixta, C. moschata, and C. pepo. There are a number of common names which are included in more than one of those. One would have to know the exact variety name to know which of the species they belong to.

I have seen seeds for sale of crosses between squash species, so they will cross. I think one was a moschata/maxima cross, but it was long ago, and there may have been more.
