As Redneck says, keep adding organics. Soil isn't going to remain alive unless something is added to feed it. A very tiny minority will rightfully claim that that is not natural but we are shouted down. In millions of years, no animal developed with the ability to feed the soil other than cats and Man. Whatever life that is in the soil may well have developed in the blink of an eye in the eons of evolution.

Black plastic mulch has not been on my garden.....ever. Tried a red plastic for a couple of seasons. Newsprint and straw are the only way for me. I would like to try a cover crop mulch between the rows for weed suppression but I worry about the cover crop sucking up all the water and nutrients. I have planted cover crops after the harvest to till back into the soil in the spring. More study before I get into between the row cover crops.

Soil Conservation Farming writeup from the New York Times Farmers Put Down the Plow for More Productive Soil"Neatly tilled fields have long been a hallmark of American agriculture and its farmers, by and large traditionalists who often distrust practices that diverge from time-honored methods. But soil-conservation farming is gaining converts as growers increasingly face extreme weather, high production costs, a shortage of labor and the threat of government regulation of agricultural pollution."
