Hi all! Newbie from central Montana. I do a mix of raised bed and more traditional bed gardening. Sometimes successfully, sometimes not. I keep trying to get some fruit trees growing, but am not all that successful at it. Between weather and quackgrass, it keeps things challenging. Now what's the secret for tomatillos?

Hey blue ... err ... Redfish! The secret for tomatillos?? Oh man, those are plants I planted about 6 years ago and have never had to plant again ... just re-position the volunteers every year. (zone 5a here) I have/had very sandy soil ... I've sheet composted it every fall for the past 12 years so it's getting to be pretty loamy soil.

Hi! mullerslanefarm I should probably rephrase that. How do you get fruit that is bigger than a dime? I have seedlings come up everywhere, get nice plants, tons of fruit............and it's all dime sized. I have sandy soil as well and these things come up in the native,as is soil and in the better, compost added garden soil. Same result every time.

Hi there, redfish. Welcome to NJT! Not sure what's going on with your tomatillos. I'd expect them to grow like weeds and reseed. Maybe try a different variety?

Welcome, Redfish! I agree with what Strat said. Also, do you thin them? I know with some plants, if they are too crowded the fruit size suffers.

I tend to treat them just like the rest of the garden plant, thinned and watered. I think I have 2 different varieties, but not sure. I planted two different varieties, but who knows.
I think things around here have issues inversely proportional to how much I want them. And I really, really like and want tomatillos!!!

Dime-size tomatillos sound more like ground cherries. I've grown both green and purple tomatillos and green are the smaller of the two but few smaller than that of a half-dollar. Treat them as you would tomatoes for growing conditions and you should get decent results.

Now what's the secret for tomatillos? For you it may be a hoop house. Which might also help your tomato crop too.

The link goes to the varieties that Baker's Creek offers. My Latina friends actually prefer the taste of the smaller tomatillos. That is the variety I have. I find it very sweet.
