Went to the Dr. yesterday had some test run and he calls me today and tells me my sciatic nerve is getting pinched. Sometimes it hurts from my lower back right on down my right leg... wants to prescribe pain pills for it, I told him that can't happen because I will have to give up my bus driving job, anyone else have this problem and what do you do for it??

It depends on the extent. Numerous times I've had chiropractic manipulations. When I feel it coming on now, I sit cross-legged in the bed and bend forward as far as I can to stretch and relax those muscles. At the same time, stretching often allows a bit of movement so that the vertebrae get a little closer to where they belong. At least it ferls that way. Many times I can twist and pop my lower back to get relief. I hope something helps.

My sister has it, but it's intermittent, not constant. She just sort of copes and limps around.

I have had problems on the other end of the spine with pinched nerves in the neck.
There is a lumbar traction device that could help. I'd consult a physical therapist.

One common problem is carrying the wallet in the back pocket of jeans. It tends to twist one's back and contribute to sciatica. I recently moved from driving a sub compact car to a truck due to the angle of my seat. My back is much improved. Those little things make a big difference, if you can pinpoint those that add to the problem.

A traditional stretching exercise to do for this, which I do a lot, esp. during the gardening season, is lying flat on the bed and pulling the knees up to the chin (as close as I can), and holding for 15 sec. Then, after several of these, I pull my feet up about halfway to my butt, then lean both knees to one side, while at the same time twisting the upper part of my body in the other direction, and holding it for several seconds, then repeating in the other direction. Im sure there are many more that can be found online, but these two have helped keep my back sort of in shape, and I had it operated on in Nov of 2000.

On a whim, and seeing the commercial for "BeActive" we went and bought one... just 12 bucks so why not give it a try right... well this thing works great I can put it on and within a couple minutes of walking around the pain is gone and I mean... GONE... Some reviews say it doesn't work, but for me it has, at least for now...

I have very bad sciatica nerve problems, it usually strikes me at night about 2,30 am,and have had it for nearly two years now, it is much worse during frosty cold weather, the only thing I have found that will give complete relief is (Tramadol Hydrochloride capsules 50mg, I have to take two capsules before or when it strikes me and the vivid pain is gone in about an hour, it is usually caused by a sudden change in temperature drop in the middle of the night and my hip and leg get uncovered by the blankets and the muscles go cold , heat patches on the area also help to prevent an attack-those stick on types and give about eight hours of relief, I don't get it much during the day except on windy blustery days and that is enough to set it off again, A combination of 2 paracetamol pain killer tablets and one Tramadol capsule together(as they can safely be mixed) often does the trick to give about four hours of relief, but basicaly nothing shifts the pain quicker than Tramadol Hydrochloride 50mg capsules and you get about four or five hours of total relief with those, you can repeat the dose every four hours if you wish, The pain is so vivid for me in the middle of the night when it strikes I sometimes cannot move for nearly an hour until the capsules of Tramdol kick in,i sometimes don't know how to get through the night because of it, but any form of heat or heat patches help a lot, the worst time for me is when I wake to go to the bathroom for a quick pee I am absolutely bursting but cannot move for nearly an hour sat on the side of the bed because the pain is so bad shooting right across my right hip from the middle of my spine and down the right side of my leg to nearly the calf muscle, it's absolute agony, but the Tramadol works and it is just a question of waiting an hour or so for it to kick in.

I went to a chiropractor some years ago when I was having debilitating neck stiffness and pain. Since I was pregnant at the time, there wasn't much a regular doctor could do for me: all most doctors can offer is drugs or surgery; neither of which was a viable choice during pregnancy.
My chiropractor worked in a combination practice with a D.O., massage therapists, and physical therapists, so they set up a treatment program with chiropractic adjustments (neck only; they didn't want to mess with my back since I was pregnant), massage, and physical therapy. The physical therapist taught me stretches and exercises to relax and strengthen my neck and shoulders. (They also sold me a Tempurpedic memory foam pillow, which I have been hooked on ever since.) After a few weeks I was right as rain. No drugs or surgery were necessary.
I still use the stretches and exercises they taught me when I feel any neck tension or pain. (I am supposed to do them every day, but I only remember to do them when my neck bugs me.)
Some chiropractors make a lot of claims about what they can fix. Some of them claim that they can fix almost anything with chiropractic treatment, which smacks of quackery to me. However, I absolutely believe that competent chiropractors can help with musco-skeletal pain.

I used to have chronic headaches. Going the chiropractor once a month took care of that.
