When you handpick them, pick them up with duct tape. That way, you can wrap them up without crushing them and thrown them in the trash and avoid the stink.
The worst here was when we took the AC out of the window last fall. There were tens of thousands of them, so we had to vacuum. The bag has been changed repeatedly and I've vacuumed a couple boxes of baking soda through it, but it STILL stinks.

I've seen Japanese Beetle traps. They say the work really well. Some say they can be a problem because the attract more beetle to your yard and not all of them make it into the trap.
