added to our forum? We are a gardening forum and doing well, but are there other things that you would like to see here to make you feel more at home here, like say boards on movies, sports, music, television, homes and decorating, news and current events and such things as that... just let me know your ideas and let's see if it works...

I come here for gardening and the people that are here.
It has lots of boards already Richard. My personal opinion is, we don't need more. But that's just me. Let's see what the others say. Oh, and definitely NOT news/Politics etc. We all know where those discussions went on iDig....

Seems like more than enough sub-forums here already. Please, no current events and politics. Of course I won't read them anyway to avoid blood pressure problems.

Glad to see a few more new members popping in. Peg, your avatar dog looks just like my beloved Cassie, I miss her so, wish I could find another one with her personality.
I come here because it's low-key and pleasant. I'm usually too busy to pay attention to more than the gardening sections, so probably would not initiate posts in any more general types of sub-forums. But I might reply to some, since I like to use the Recent Threads feature to save time. Agree with others about avoiding political and social topics.

Peg, your avatar dog looks just like my beloved Cassie, I miss her so, wish I could find another one with her personality. That's my boy Chico! He's been gone for several years and I really miss him too. He wasn't much of a chore dog with the sheep, but always willing to go for a ride. He was great on coyote patrol, too. And I am looking for another one from that bloodline with similar somewhat laid-back personality. Peg

I don't visit often but it's a nice forum and I keep saying that should stop by more frequently.
The number of boards and sub-boards is a bit overwhelming already and I always feel that I can't read everything. This is probably one of the reasons that I don't visit often.
I also see the hard work creativity in creating the themes but they have been a bit too busy for my taste. I like this new blue one.
When I come here it is for gardening. I definitely hear enough news and especially politics on TV.

I love that this is a gardening forum and I hope it stays a gardening forum but I will stay with it regardless. I love the administrators who started this and the people who hang here. i find it a very judgment free zone with nice people. Keep on keepin' on!

I come here to learn more about gardening and possibly brag a little when I get something right. I would hate to see this this site go the way of Idig.

Dude: NJT is fine the way it is....more posters would be nice. I have so much advise just waiting to share sometimes it bubbles out whether anybody wants it or not. Keep up the good work. I agree...no politics or religion.

I think there's too many here already. I like a forum with only a few top categories and let the thread titles take care of the sub categories. That makes it much easier to navigate and more likely to catch more of the discussions going on. Which would help boost participation I think. I usually don't feel like clicking on every category just to see if something interesting is being discussed, but if it were all under a few headings I could scan the topic titles and catch things of interest, or something I have knowledge of.
Gardening, first to grow all my own food, then moving toward commercial scale, and experimentation with high brix/nutrient dense, is my agriculture goal. But I have other interests as well, most of which kind of ties in with growing food.

I like NJT as it is with no news, nor politics. We're a nice family here; easygoing. Other boards are out there for heated discussions and picking fights. I always enjoy reading what others are working on.

I have actually given up on the sub topics on most forums, I just bookmark the recent threads link to get to the forum notjusttomatoes.proboards.com/threads/recentthat way I never see the entire list of topics, I kind of like the no politics here as well

After reading through the Forum this morning I totally agree with this. too many categories and most of them have minimal threads or posts. It seems a bit cluttered. A very nice forum overall, just too many categories to keep up with.

No more sub topics are wanted or needed in my opinion.

Ok... so no more categories or boards needed, but I did notice that some are saying we are cluttered. Should I combine some of this to make it a little easier to read our forum... what would you like to see adjusted to make it easier for you? Please don't be afraid to voice your opinion here as I really would like to see more members posting and if you have an idea on how this forum needs to be then just let me know.

I was going to say "lawns and trees" until I searched harder and discovered them to be under "herbs and spices". And "trees" are under "fruits and nuts", which are also under "herbs and spices". Someone looking for lawns and trees may not think to look under herbs and spices. Also, pepper is a spice and should be in the vegetable garden section; at least, that's where I have mine. When doing chores, I think of it like this: Vegetable garden, which is not just tomatoes, but all those annuals that bear fruit. Herb garden, which are herbs and leafy things. Root crops, taters, onions, garlic, carrots, etc. Berries, Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc. Trees, which include pears, apples, peaches, and the nuts and pines and hardwoods. Flowers and exotic plants.Lawn.Then we have the pond and the waterfowl and other birds, which leads into the livestock topic. Then we have machinery, which includes mowers, tractors, tillers, etc. I'd draw the line there because that's about all one has time for

There are already way too many sub forums. I'd get rid of more than half of them. Just leave the main headings so we can click to see all the threads in one category at one time. I rarely click on any of the subs now. For the sake of speed, I click on 'recent threads'.
No matter what you do it won't be perfect. There will never be a perfect number or alignment of sub forums. Trust that the members will be able to find what they are looking for.
Less is more.

This is a very simplified format with no sub forums at all. This might encourage more looking and participation.
Welcome Vegetable gardening Other gardening Kitchen - recipes and preserving your produce Pets and livestock Coffee shop - anything you want to discuss (exept religion and politics)

Hmmm... I'm really not understanding this Gianna... could you give me a little more detail? If I take out the sub-forums and add them as plain boards it will make the forum much longer with a bunch of scrolling to do... am I taking what you're asking wrong?

I totally agree. For example look at the board "general plant information and news", the most recent posting is from August,2015 which is nearly a whole year ago, yet it is still cluttering up the home page.
I like this forum but I really do not have time to scan through all of these topics so I just look for the new stuff as others have suggested but I have also noticed that the pages seem to load really slow when I try to go back and forth. Maybe because there are so many categories to load?
I don't think that less categories lead to too much scrolling because as many posters have stated, they only read the most recent postings so they would not be scrolling to the older stuff and there is a search function for that anyway if they are looking for something specific.
The "new" icon shows me what I want to read and I would prefer scrolling to the "new" icon in one board rather than continually opening new boards and looking for the new content but that's just me. Maybe others do not feel the same.

I just click on the"Recent Threads" button at the top of the screen and all the latest posts come up, no clutter of any kind. The ones I have not seen come up tagged as New. I think you might have to be logged in for this to work correctly.
I rarely go to the home page and look through the categories, unless I am searching for specific information, so I am fine with leaving those alone or not. You would have to use it to initiate a new topic, of course.

If I take out the sub-forums and add them as plain boards it will make the forum much longer with a bunch of scrolling to do... am I taking what you're asking wrong? I don't have a specific format idea in mind, but I will give you my impression as a relatively new poster. I've been looking for a good veg gardening board. One of the things I look for is level of activity, and a good % of experienced gardeners who participate more than lurk. This board is a bit quiet, and seeing so many sub forums in which there is virtually no activity makes the board seem even more inactive. With fewer rooms, that would seem less obvious.
'Recent threads' is a very good feature, but not everyone just stopping by may notice or use it.
If my suggestion of removing all sub forums seems too draconian, start by removing some of the more narrow, inactive rooms, and make a room or too more general so almost anything would fit in. For example, all 'seed' discussions can go into 'gardening'. And encourage people to use more descriptive thread titles. If a thread doesn't totally fit, we're big kids and will cope.

I always use the "recent threads" option, in this, and other forums. And to deal with the slow transfer from one screen to the next, I save about half of that time by opening anything I want to look at in a new screen, then, when I'm done reading, or responding, I clear that screen, and it instantly goes back to the original "recent threads" screen.
The only time I have to look through the subforums is when I post a new thread, but no big deal.
