OKAY, here goes. I seeded 2 squash of the same variety once again this year - Melonette. This is a winter squash. Lo & behold, they are growing fine, but one is way bigger than the other and is NOT producing a vine. Instead, it is growing like a summer squash of some particularly large variety. I didn't grow summer squash last year when I put my seeds together in packages in the fall, so 100% of my Melonette seeds should be Melonettes, right? Apparently not. I have no summer squash seeds anywhere. What are the possibilities? I have 2 other winter squashes - both are Chinese Alphabet Squash- and they are vining as they should. Meh...

do your neighbors have gardens ? maybe they had some that crossed with yours ? I have had very strange things show up saving seeds, suspect small gardens of people around is where at least some of it showed up from

Hi, spacecase. Tks for your reply. We live in the country and are quite a distance from neighbours, and there's bush inbetween us in any case. More relevant: they do not garden. Whatever the Mystery Squash is, if it survives and produces fruit, I'll take a photo and publish it here!
On a related topic, I just love volunteers that show up in the garden.
