Really? They don't grow the same, how?? I haven't grown purple potatoes since the 80's so I've obviously forgotten much about them. But I have some on order for this year. Looking forward to growing them again.

I did not like the flavor much. but it has been long enough that I can't remember what they were like,
and they seemed to like cooler weather than the others I have grown

spacecase0 that makes sense as 4 out of 5 varieties available through the seed potato farm I'm ordering from are all Late Varieties and give specific planting instructions so that they will mature in time in Zones 2,3 and 4. @daylilydude, they listed the Russian Blue variety that I am getting as being "remarkably normal tasting" considering it's deep purple colour. And says that All Blue (which may be the same potato with a different name) to be good for mashed, baked or fries, so a good all purpose spud.

I grow the All Blue on a regular basis, they seem to do better here than anything else except yukon gold. We love them! I can't say as they taste all that different. There's just something about a bowl of pale purple mashed potatoes covered with a cream gravy! Interestingly, I have found that the potato beetle doesn't seem to like them quite as much as the white ones I've grown. They'll still eat them plenty, especially if they are the only ones around, but when I have had both growing, the whites were always more infested than the blues.

All-Blue is primarily a boiler here. I've been growing it since around 2010 and it certainly has produced a mix of results. Some years there are few tubers but medium to large. Next year may be dozens but all about the size of a golf ball.
Magic Molly was new last year and I was only given enough for a few hills. Worked OK as a fryer but fell apart in a crock pot. Getting a second chance this year but only 8 pieces planted back.

I grew purple/dark fleshed potatoes this past year but won't again. There was nothing wrong with the growth or production or flavor, but I did not like not knowing if I got the skins clean of dirt or blemishes. I'm not a spic-n-span person by any stretch, but I ended up feeling the need to peel the purple ones. So, no more.

I like the purple ones because I think that they look pretty especially in potato salad or roasted with other veggies all cut into cubes but hubby says that he doesn't like the taste. I can't tell any difference but I don't grow them just for myself.
My neighbor did tell me that she tried them mashed and they were ugly looking, almost gray and not appetizing.

We are growing potatoes for the first time in years. We bought a bag of yellow/gold potatoes and liked them so much I saved out about three pounds and used them as seed potatoes. I wonder what we will get. I liked the bright yellow mashed potatoes. I have eaten purples and did not notice any difference in flavor form other colors.

To me purple potatoes taste like new potatoes--with a kind of waxy and "firm" texture, but I like floury potatoes, so no, I can't say I am a fan.
