Hi ladymarmalade! So nice of you to send such a warm welcome. I don't have a garden so far this year. I'm looking for a place to call home. I've had a couple of dandy gardens in the past, a few of which have been substantial. Grew for three families back in 2014... turned into 6 or 7 eating out of it when the extended family found out how good stuff was... But that wasn't my land and isn't available anymore. Need some dirt. And I miss the garden terribly. (That big garden had almost 90 tomato plants. Oh, the sauce... mmm, mmm, mmm. Soooo many good eats.) Looking for a place on the TN Cumberland Plateau. Like the people. It's close to civilization but not too close. Plus, it's about half way between mine and my wife's family.

Mmm, the location you are looking sounds perfect to me. I like civilization an awful lot, but I also like the peace and quiet of being away from it.
Will you have an opportunity to sow a few seeds in pots during this transient year? The years I couldn't have a garden I tried to at least have a few herbs and a cherry tomato in a pot. It kept me connected and dreaming of the gardens to come.

Howdy poppopt, we are sure glad you joined our little, but growing gardening community! I'm with you on not wanting to live to close to the city, it's about a 10 minute straight shot from where I live to the lil city Iuka, MS. and the wife and I love it. LOL... If you have a few buckets you can have some gardening...at least some tomato and peppers and at least get your hands in some soil cause we all know that is a hafta do in the spring. Well nuff with my rambling just jump in anywhere you like and post away.

Howdy back at ya, Richard! I had to go look up Iuka, MS. It's not as far away from me (close to Crossville, TN right now) as I first thought it might be. Why you're just a short ways from Lawrenceburg, TN. My dear wife and I had poked around over in those parts some before heading over to the Cumberland Plateau. I'm originally from Lancaster county PA, Amish country, so you might have an idea why we were checking out Lawrenceburg. We did have a small place, about 4 acres, down in Philadelphia, Mississippi a few years back. It was about 2" of topsoil over hard clay. Never could get much going on that. But the main trouble we had was I just couldn't fit in. Being the Yankee that I am, I never could learn to speak with the correct accent or say "y'all" correctly. Had to sell that and move on. I've been tempted to get a few pots of something going. Space is definitely at a premium, though, as our total living space is less than 400 square feet. Home sweet home is a 39' fifth wheel travel trailer parked in an RV park. And we're getting the distinct impression that it's time to be outta here. Have been looking at properties. Hardest part is not having much cash and the nicest places are nearly impossible to finance. Would love some acreage but most finance companies balk at more than just an acre or two. Might have to find something as a stepping stone. There's a 4.5 acre place that might work, gonna check it out this weekend. The payments would be less than the RV park! We'll have to see on that one. Speaking of rambling, I've done quite a bit of it, and barely scratched the surface. Thanks for the warm welcome! I look forward to reading and maybe even offering a thought or two here or there. Maybe I'll even get lucky and be able to help someone sometime! Hope so.

Welcome to the forum! And good luck finding a place to set up your new garden. Thanks, pepperhead212! It's great to be finding new friends here. Contacted our realtor for a showing. (fingers crossed) We're trying. Was talking with my wife yesterday. Would rather try and fail than never try at all. Want to look at a place that has about 8 or 9 open and usable acres of ground plus that many more in woods. Has a pond, a well and a gas well on the property. Price is a stretch, though. Don't know if we can do it. If we can't we'll keep looking. But if we can...
