Some of my earliest memories are of eating raspberries off the bush at my Grandpa's house. I've always loved them and have been babying along a patch for several years now- we moved it twice in two years, so it's taken a while to get some vigor. We had a few handfuls last year, but it seems we've finally hit the capacity we were hoping for! DH had picked a bunch while we were gone, but apparently he's never been educated in raspberry picking and he only picked what he could see. He did not know to gently pick up the canes and pick the underside where the biggest, juiciest berries hide! I picked them clean today and expect I'll have to do it again Sunday or Monday. My first inclination is to make a batch of jam, but we'll most likely just eat these and I'll make jam with the next harvest.

Cobbler might happen today. Last night I made ultra-loaded vanilla-raspberry pancakes for dinner. I made enough to have a few cakes leftover for breakfast, and they all got eaten! I'm going back and forth between a cobbler and a pie. It's supposed to stay below 80ºF out, so I have the chance to bake before it gets hot and humid again tomorrow.

All I can say is.... where is the cool-whip... Oh, no. Only the real stuff here. Real whipped cream, very lightly sweetened with powdered sugar. Purchased from a local dairy- it's so thick it's like pouring a milkshake out of the carton.

I wish I could grow some! Since we moved to our current location, I haven't had any luck with them. It's been 8 years! How is it that I can keep marion berries alive in Montana but not raspberries?!

Wow, that's strange, because they're like weeds here. Raspberries really can be invasive if you don't have a plan to pull them out as they come up (or contain them in the first place.)

Hmmm, ladymarmalade, do raspberry plants have thorns like some black berries plants do?

Hmmm, ladymarmalade, do raspberry plants have thorns like some black berries plants do? Yes. Though, they are smaller and more fine. They don't generally draw blood, and you learn quickly how to handle the plants so the thorns don't bother your hands. The mosquitoes were very thick today, and I don't use spray when I work in the garden. But as I made my way through some of my plants, the raspberry branches brushing on my legs felt SO good! I thought I'd take a picture of an immature raspberry cane. First year canes don't generally produce berries, though some do at times. The second year canes are the ones that are loaded down. But here on this first year cane you can see the black specks that are thorns. They get a little longer and more prickly the second year. I could not get my phone to focus on the branch in front of me, but I think you can see enough to get the idea.
