An old high school friend (yes old we are both old lol) grows amazing blueberries. He has all he wants and is turning me loose in his blueberry bushes tomorrow to take all I want. Last year I got enough blueberries to can jam, pie filling AND syrup! So excited!!

I love blueberries! Pick extra for the freezer! They're the easiest fruit to freeze because you don't need to do anything to them. Just pop them in a freezer bag and freeze. I like to freeze them now when it's hot and make my preserves later once it has cooled down and freezing makes this possible. It's really fun to make a batch of Spiced Blueberry Butter on a cold winter day. I think we're skipping the blueberries this year because I have a lot in the freezer yet from the last few years. I make pick up ten pounds or so for fresh eating though.

Free blueberries - what a nice score, spike! Hope you have plenty of canning jars and freezer space so you can stock up.

Just returned from our annual Canadian fishing trip to the Dryden, Ont. area. Wild blueberries were just starting, so picking was slow. Also, our favorite reliable spot had some running water over the access trail, due to too much rain this summer. The beavers had starting in dam building. We drove over the first two, but decided the third one was too iffy. There have been a lot of new clearcuts in the last 10 years, and we scouted up some new areas that should be good in the future. Came home with 19 quarts of cleaned and frozen blueberries and our limit of walleyes. Last year we had a better year with 39 quarts. We fish in the early morning, pick berries in the middle of the day when the brush is dry, and often fish in the evening again. Each day's berries are cleaned using the paper plate/paper towel method and frozen in quart ziplocks in the camp freezer. Here is what our usual picking areas look like. This was one from a few years back that we called The Lynx Cut because we saw a lynx cross the road the first time we went there.

I don’t think the deer are going to let me win the blueberry battle. This is it for the year and I’m lucky to get these. I think I’ll give up the fight.
