Hello. I run distance track for my high school. Today we had our first meet of the season and I was running the 4th leg of a 4 x 800 meter race which is 2 laps around a track. The 800 is my least favorite distance. I don't have my exact time but it was somewhere between 2:32 and 2:35. It would have been faster but as I was starting my 2nd lap I ran into a guy who was just finishing. He stopped about 15 meters into lane 1 and I yelled at him to move but he didn't and I didn't have time to move out of the way so I sort of ended up hip checking him to get him out of the way. This slowed me down because it killed my momentum and I had to get going again. We have two track meets next week.

I have no idea why he stopped. I think he just stopped because he had just finished and was tired. You're supposed to move to the outside lanes of the track or go quickly into the infield after you finish but for some reason he didnt.

I'm glad you're not hurt, Lefty. Isn't blocking the lane cheating? Seems there'd be a penalty for that.

It didn't really matter because we were so far behind. We finished 2nd to last. It wasnt anything to deserve disqualification but he really needs to remember that there are other people running.

Lefty, I have been a runner and coach since heck was a pup and the answer why you had that problem is in the coaching. A good coach knows how to instill sportsmanship and common courtesy no matter the level of ability. In high school you can't really run over a guy like that because you would be the one who gets disciplined or disqualified, but as a college runner, if someone pulled that stunt he would be knocked for a loop and flat on his face and told that he knows better than to get in the way. On the international level the guy would have spike tracks on his back and then get tossed out of the competition
You did the right thing to try and avoid a collision. I can tell you know what to do; good for you and good luck with the rest of the season.

Thanks Paul. My coach does a very good job at telling us to be sportsman like and courteous because we are a very good team and a very big team he doesnt want any reason for other teams not to like us.

Hey Left, this ain't none of my business, but what made you decide to become a runner? I really have no idea. It's just something I wanted to do because I kind of liked it and it was a good thing to train for other sports but now it's the only sport I do and I love it.

Train hard and you will see the fruits of your labor. My uncle Lee still has records at Western Michigan University for the 3000 meter steeplechase, the 3 mile, and the 2 mile. And some of the best advice I can give you is do not ever allow substances that will damage your lungs to be used around you. When I ran Cross Country in High School I tried to smoke cigarettes at the same time. It cost us a dearly.

Thursday I ran the 1600 in 5:32 and took it easy. Saturday I ran the 1600 in 5:18. It was a 5 second improvement.

I just saw this. My son was a distance runner in high school also. He ran Cross Country, too. He is in the Air Force now (going on 5 years), and when he was in college-that distance training helped him with boot camp experience. He still runs, and is in great physical shape. Keep it up-it's good for you! The only thing I didn't like about him running, was his going to the sidelines AFTER running and throwing up!
