For those of you in more temperate climates: do you think it possible to start cabbage from seed at this time? Methinks we have several more mild weeks of highs in 60-70s, and I don't anticipate any hard freezes until Jan or Feb.

I also have a cabbage question! What type of cabbage grows best in gardens? I have had some luck with flat head dutch but I don't get those big beautiful heads.

I grow Golden Acre. The heads aren't huge, they are about 4 lbs each but that is the perfect size for us.

I would love it if meandtk could share what cabbage he is currently growing. He has big, gorgeous heads that might be what you are looking for. Personally, I grow Caraflex, which is an arrowhead cabbage. It's smaller, so it takes up a smaller space in my garden and gives me the perfect amount of cabbage per head. One head makes a decent amount of slaw for my family, or a good sized jar of kraut, or enough to flesh out two pans of stir-fry. It also has a great, buttery texture to it. I get my seeds from Jung Seeds.

Those big ones are called Megaton, I think. My mom picked up three at thee feed n seed store for me. They grow up to around 10 pound heads.

Danish Ballhead is best for everything you'd need a cabbage for. Dependable year after year. It's late but Early Golden Acre will also give similar results but smaller and earlier.

Martin The truth is more important than the facts. Making a note to see if I have either of these varieties. If they grow well for you, I feel like I have a shot here!

By the way, on the topic of the OP: it has been so hectic that I never got the cabbage seeds in the buckets. Maybe I'll bring it inside to try.
