Do you use this... what do you find good or bad about it?
I don't use it, but the wife loves it to keep up with the family... I say just call or go see them!

I love facebook and my husband hates it. I have friends, family, loved ones and those I hold dear from Florida to Alaska. Canada, Mexico, Ecuador and Venezuela. I do not allow politics or religion on my page and I don't read it on other pages. I do not allow drama on my page and will block abusers. It is MY page after all. If someone can't respect my wishes they are gone. WOO I am a drama free zone. At one point I had 101 friends so I changed my picture to Cruella Deville!! Facebook is what you make it. I make it happy.

I used to. All those stupid scripts made it impossible to do much with on this iPad.... And not being able to find posts after a day or two gets really old...
It was kind of a relief when facebook decided they didn't like my name, and refused to let me login.

I don't have it. When I was working it could be hazardous to my career. After I retired, I didn't want to invent excuses to block people.

I avoided it for years, finally made an account for my cat with his own gmail addy so I could look at the few gardening related pages I was interested in. I have only told two very old friends about it, so I can keep up with their travel pictures and hiking adventures. I have no plans to post anything myself and only check things on average once a week or if I am really bored. For the most part, Facebook seems very superficial to me, mostly people posting selfies and others telling them how good they look! I would much rather email or phone someone and have a one on one meaningful conversation. Yes, I'm an introvert! And value my privacy!

I don't have enough time to bother with it...at least when I'm working! And even when I'm sitting around with all time on my hands, I'm not going to get addicted to it, like some do.

I use FB and I like it. I like it especially for keeping up with extended family that I never see. I feel like I have a better connection with my cousins (I have a LOT) because we interact occasionally on FB. The rare times when we get together, we always have something to talk about right away instead of the obligatory "what you been up to?" We all know what each other has been up to and can get right to the good conversations and fun instead of the catching up.
I hate, hate, hate the politics and I hid a lot of people over the last election cycle. Kindness people, kindness. I don't mind religious posts because I am very busy and active in my church and half of the reason I'm even on FB is to connect with my fellow church members.
I dislike group chats on FB a lot and far prefer the forum formats. I'm in a couple of groups on FB and they are cluttering up my feed all the time, despite changing my preferences and settings. It's impossible to go back to a conversation because they move too quickly there and searching for old posts is so clunky.

I have a FB account but rarely use it. I have found it useful for finding people that I have lost contact with but I do not use it on a regular basis.
It seems to be nice for some people with really big families. It would be easier than calling everyone on the phone.

I do use Facebook. Keeps me in touch with old friends and family. I do not allow public access to posts. I hate the political posts and delete and deny all that garbage. Seems like there are too many who add links to their posts...which I delete and deny.

I'm on there. At first, wasn't by choice since another gardener started one but not in my name. Family and friends soon found out and that account was closed and a proper one started. One heirloom group recently found me sending tomato seeds all over the US plus Canada, Germany, and Indonesia. And a swap added 50 more tomato varieties two days before Christmas. I have 8 varieties going to a seed bank tomorrow for sharing there.

Sooooo much better than Facebook.... Of course, Rupert ruined it.... I have people that I used to know all over the country.... They ALL know me as stone. When Facebook sends me an email offering "one click" getting back on.... I get steered to a page that insults me by claiming that I'm not using the name that I use in my daily life.... And no way to protest this. They want my drivers license so that law enforcement can find me... Pretty sure that if law enforcement wanted to track me...l they'd be able to do so with the name that everybody else knows me by... Stoopid Facebook! Re political... I made sure to have "friends" all over the spectrum.... I actually enjoyed the different perspectives.... I was in a lot of groups, and posted frequently... Kinda miss all my different groups... And then.... There's that page I had which I can't update any more.. Found it: www.facebook.com/pages/stonethegardener/319380714761453

There's actual support groups on Facebook for those of us that have been blocked because of our names... I even belonged to one... doesn't help much if I can't log on... Facebook wants our information... Reckon they collect for the NSA? FBI? Have you ever heard about the people that joined... and can't un-join?

I joined Facebook many years ago but I never use it. I gave them my real name but I never had to provide and ID. I don't see a problem with them requiring "real" names if that is one of the conditions of using their free service.
I am DEFINITELY NOT saying anything negative about anyone here but maybe that is one way that Facebook tries to limit fraudulent activity. You know that the criminals always ruin things for honest people don't they?

I signed up my cat, all he needed was an email address, and gmail worked fine. Although they provide some background questions you can answer, you don't have to. I only wanted it so I could read a few interesting FB sites, not to post or interact.
It probably is different if you already have an account and lose your password or try to use another email or something that might be a clue that your FB account may have been breached.

I was thinking about this thread today and about the problem with young kids and bullying. Might it not prevent some bullying if kids have to give their real names and not be able to say all kinds of terrible things while hiding behind an alias?

It probably is different if you already have an account and lose your password or try to use another email or something that might be a clue that your FB account may have been breached. As long as your cat doesn't post on groups, or add pictures or actually use the site for connecting with friends, you won't have to worry about having your identity questioned. Facebook just gives trouble to the people that actually use the site... You people talking about "real names"... If I sign up using the name I use in everyday life... That IS my real name. Facebook claims that they want your friends to be able to find you... And then try to compel use of a name that we don't use! How's your friends gonna find you if you aren't on the site using the name they are searching?

The reason they want your real name has very little to do with preventing online abuse or bullying, or even helping your friends find you, sad to say.
Facebook's desire to verify your identity is so they can mine your personal details to sell to advertisers, and so they can customize the ads you see to what they perceive to be your interests. The more active (and interactive with others) you are, the more valuable a commodity you become. That's why they insist on getting your real name if you actually post instead of just reading a few things.
They also realize that as you become more active on Facebook, the more important it becomes to your life. Once folks are hooked, they know that most of them will provide whatever information they ask for in order to keep Facebook access. Folks like Stone who say "no" and give up Facebook are a tiny minority.
Remember: if an online service is free, then YOU are the product! The same is true even of ProBoards. It's just that Facebook is a lot more intrusive than ProBoards. But then again so are Google, Apple, etc....

When we lived in a very rural setting, far from family, openings pictures from family was impossible on dial up. My brother was in a large city and on high speed, he just couldn't wrap his head around having to edit things so that I could see them. Enter FB. It automatically made those files small. We could chat without long distance charges. We could see each others pics of children and eventually grandchildren. In it's pure form for connecting like that, FB was a godsend.
Then there was the 60+ hours a week that I was away from home between the commute and work. Before work and after work, I had farm chores and menial tasks like laundry, cooking meals, washing dishes. It was 10 pm some nights when I arrived in the door. How does one have time to make real friends in an environment like that? It was my escape from the grind.
I despise how commercial it has become. But it's been a part of my life for so long now that I don't want to give it up.

Can you really blame online services for wanting to provide advertising to you? They are giving you a service absolutely free. They need advertisers to pay for their operating costs or they would not be able to provide that service. We expect to be able to use their site 24 hours a day and have it be virus free and we want them to delete malicious content and porn. All of these things cost money but yet we pay nothing for this service. Somebody has to pay for all of those employees to get a paycheck.
I am no expert on Facebook and I really don't use it but they certainly do not need my real name to target advertising to me. I get lots of advertising based on sites that I visit and things that I search for and I am not using my real name. I get targeted advertising and my real name is definitely not brown rexx. It is based on my email address.
And I still think that kids would be less likely to Cyberbully someone if the comment came up right beside their real name.

The thing to remember about FB being commercial is the same reason that it is free. Someone has to pay the expenses so we can enjoy it for giving only our time.
As for those who don't like it, there's a simple solution, Don't go there and don't fault those who do. A half-sister whom I hadn't seen or heard from for years found me there. A foster-daughter hadn't been seen since 1990 found me there. For a lot of my extended family, nice to see what's happening in real time instead of maybe seeing them at Christmas. That's what FB is for. If that's not your life, don't go there.

I realize that advertising keeps it free. I merely said I despise the extent to which the ads have invaded FB. It wasn't always like that.
The new rules about Real names and email addresses for minors is relatively new as well. That is Welcome. Because FB has photos and info easily traceable to the people who are posting, it's a safety feature. It keeps the Spambots and Cyberbullies in tow. There are still some odd names on the site, but as an admin for a couple of groups I tend to watch them closer than I do some of the other members.
Martin, that's wonderful that you were reunited with your Foster Daughter through FB. I have been reunited with some very good friends from high school on FB. None of us live in the area we went to school in. It's great to find friends who now live in TX, the U.K., and British Columbia.

We have a flip phone in a drawer somewhere. It gets plugged in a taken with us on trips. I don't even know the number. The kids have it in case we are on the road and they need something. I am an iMac user so Bing doesn't work so well since it is the Microsoft version of Google. I use a browser called Dogpile and am happy with it. It is an old one but works fine for me. Not a computer nut here but when the thingie went down for a while last year it was a struggle to do without until we got a new router.
Speaking of Google, our son-in-law got us a Google Home for Christmas. We can talk to it to get questions answered, it turns on lights at certain times of the day, turns others on and off when we tell it to. It would lock the doors and a lot of other things if we programmed it to do those things. I can even do my banking and bill paying if I wanted. Way over my head but we are getting used to it.
So now will it go out and pull weeds?

So now will it go out and pull weeds? Now THAT might encourage me to buy one! Last summer hubby we were driving somewhere and hubby pulled over to the side of the road unexpectedly. He wanted me to see the robot lawn mower working at a lawn along on our way. It looked sort of like one of those robot vacuum cleaners and he said that it just mows the lawn and then returns to its charger when it is done. I was fascinated to watch it. I had never seen one of those before. It was a fairly small yard and totally flat. Actually I wondered what would keep someone from stealing it. Does it scream "HELP, HELP" if someone picks it up or maybe give them an electric shock like a dog collar?
