I signed up my cat, all he needed was an email address, and gmail worked fine. Although they provide some background questions you can answer, you don't have to. I only wanted it so I could read a few interesting FB sites, not to post or interact. It probably is different if you already have an account and lose your password or try to use another email or something that might be a clue that your FB account may have been breached. ...... You people talking about "real names"... If I sign up using the name I use in everyday life... That IS my real name. Facebook claims that they want your friends to be able to find you... And then try to compel use of a name that we don't use! How's your friends gonna find you if you aren't on the site using the name they are searching?....... Yep, the name I grew up with... I got married and it changed. HOW in the world would anybody search for me by the name I grew up with anyways? It isn't the name I use today.... so nope. they can keep my account held hostage and I won't be their commodity.

Some people use their maiden name as their middle name so their name would still come up on a search as the name that they grew up with even after they are married. I don't do this but many women do. I don't think that just helping friends that you grew up with find you is the only reason that they require real names. I think that cutting down on cyber bullying has something to do with it too. they can keep my account held hostage and I won't be their commodity. That is probably the best way to handle it. No one can force you to post on Facebook. I don't either.

Cyberbullies, Perverts, the usual.
I have my Maiden name in brackets because I moved away in my late teens and so many of the friends I have found from Elementary through High School only knew me by that name. They didn't know that I've had not one, but two married names. Now does this make sense?? If you have been fortunate enough to remain in contact with people for your entire life then no need for adding a maiden name or a previous surname. Some of us haven't.

I have used FB for years to keep in contact with family and to see pictures of my family. A few of my nieces are all over FB posting pictures every day it seems. I never write a political post but 4 or 5 times have shared one and have shared a Bible verse someone posted. Well I think I’m being stalked and possibly bullied by a person who remembers me from 9th grade who I don’t even remember knowing. We were at the same school, we have common friends, and I ran into her at a mall one day years ago and she recognized me and spoke to me. A while back I accepted her FB friendship but have never followed her because most of her posts are politically motivated. Lately she is responding to every post I post and comments that my friends post and it’s usually negative. I’m thinking of unfriendling her.

I’m thinking of unfriendling her. Sounds like a good idea.

This is an example of why I rarely go to FB!

Smart move. Nobody needs a "friend" like that!

People can be so weird. I mean I haven't talked to this woman in person for at least 25 years and then it was at a mall in passing. I think she quit school in 9th grade so she wasn't even at my high school. What makes a person act this way.

What makes a person act this way. Who would ever know the answer to that question. I think that social media allows more weirdness to show because people do not see your face when they say things. I think that being semi anonymous makes them more brave and apt to say thing that they shouldn't. Basically, poor social skills and no manners!
