I put away the remainder of the Christmas decorations that were hanging around on the fireplace mantle and then I went to the gym and worked out to try to keep those Christmas cookies from making a permanent home on my hips ( it's warm at the gym).
Then I grocery shopped and came home and will be staying indoors for the rest of the day. It is 14 degrees with a 25 mph wind.

Got up, breakfast, then played tennis. Afterwards, went to the nursery where I purchased my pineapple guavas and got one more. After lunch, I'll plant it, and another I did not put in the other day. We have big rain predicted for Monday so if time today, I'll hook up the 4th downspout for collection. If not today, tomorrow. Oh, and finish planting in the experimental annual flowers.

Not much, played on the computer and enjoyed the break in the arctic blast. Imagine a weeks worth of freezing weather in south Mississippi. I plan to go to the gym within 30 minutes, can't put that off for another day. Tomorrow I might go see the movie Darkest Day before it closes.

I'm nursing a nuisance of a cold today. I had originally planned on taking all the Christmas decorations down, but then I ended up on a vegetable hunting expedition during my take-down time and now I'm out of steam.
I have to figure out something to do with some of the bounty for dinner yet. Other than that, I'm calling it a good-enough day and I might watch some TV or a movie or something.

Cold and sore throat here too! Mostly laid around all day, washed yesterday's dishes in the sink and ate leftover spaghetti for supper. Found some unexpired nasal spray to try to stop the dripping nose for the night. Hope I have more energy tomorrow.

Had a quiet day. Traveled in my motor home from Brooking Oregon to Benbow California. Glad to be out of the Oregon coast rain.

I went to the grocery store this morning and I heard that the schools were dismissing kids at 11 am. As I came out of the store I noticed that it was starting to rain ice balls. I got home ahead of the worst of it but now everything outdoors is covered with a thin layer of ice.
I spent the rest of the day doing paperwork in our home office and looking out the window and watching it alternate between snow and rain which immediately freezes since it is about 20 degrees.
I started organizing papers for taxes and even that was more fun than driving on ice covered roads.

Woo Wee, BR. Doesn't sound like swimming weather, does it?

Waiting out this storm in southern California, before going over the GrapeVine, and on into the L.A country. Have no interest in getting into a mud slide situation.

Woo Wee, BR. Doesn't sound like swimming weather, does it? Not exactly but today when it got up to 44° you could just about swim in all of the puddles on the roads from the melting snow. It was really sloppy everywhere so I put a roast and some potatoes and carrots in the crock pot and then went to the gym and worked out. Didn't do much else today.

For some reason the temperature dropped significantly. It's in the 40's and yesterday, we were in the 60's.

I was up early this morning harvesting rain water. First real rain of the season and we got almost 3 inches. I collected close to 3,000 gallons. It was cold and wet out there. The blueberries better appreciate it.

First real rain of the season and we got almost 3 inches. Wow, that must be huge for you. How do you store so much water? I have a 300 gallon tote for my rainwater. Are you safe from mudslides where you live?

Gianna, I'm glad that you're okay so far. I was thinking about you when I read the awful headlines about the mudslides. Echoing brownrexx's question, are you safe from the mudslides where you live?

I was looking at some of the photos from the mudslides this morning. So scary! I can't even imagine... And then, how does clean-up even happen? How do you scoop up all that debris and re-locate it with any sense of expediency? Just crazy.

I don't live in the area of the mudslides, but I am very familiar with it. It's shocking what happened there. I see photos of places I know, yet they are unrecognizable now. Picturesque streams that had been encroached upon by homes/buildings have been scoured out. The latest report is 100 homes destroyed, and 300 more damaged.
Many roads are impassable. There are said to be 300 people stranded up in one of the canyons. Still in their homes and most likely not in danger. They just can't get out because the roads were washed out. In Montecito, at least 15 dead, and maybe 2 dozen more missing - and probably more than that.

Actually, what I did yesterday...It was nice out yesterday and was to rain today...which it did...
Raked up 2 big trash cans full of leaves and spread them around the garden... Neatened up some other stuff out there...
Odd to be raking this time of year but for some reason, my Japanese Red Maple has not dropped the majority of its leaves yet...neither has my neighbor's Japanese maple...They're just falling willy nilly... Besides that, they never had time to turn their nice red that they usually get...They went from 'alive looking' to curled up brownish...and that's where they've pretty much stayed...
The weather from fall to winter was goofy...the trees are confused...

Supposed to rain here tomorrow, so while they were still nice and dry, I harvested an enormous amount of dried flower heads from my purple Gomphrena globosa for seed for this year's crop to be started reasonably soon under the grow lights set up...

We have a log cabin in the woods of Central PA. We come here about every other weekend. We have central heat as a backup but we don't use it unless necessary. We have a wood stove in the corner of the living room that we use to heat the cabin.
We are surrounded by woods and we enjoy watching for deer and I have bird feeders right outside my windows.
Yesterday we stacked firewood and today we cleaned out rain spouts that were full of leaves but when we are here we pretty much relax and enjoy nature. It is very peaceful and relaxing.

Tedious job transferring my bean collection data base from one computer to another. Since I'm changing the format it's going to take awhile. Sure there's probably a quicker way but I have my own method of doing things:).

My collards are doing super. Yesterday I picked a whole bunch of leaves, deveined them, sort of chopped them up and dehydrated them. On low heat, that took less than 24 hours. Then today I put the dried leaves in a large bowl, mushed them with my fingers into small flakes, and put them in jars. I got about 3 pints. I like to add these to various soups and stews for added nutritional punch. And you really can't tell.
I've got some kale to process as well, but might wait till there is another round of collard leaves too. Eventually I might harvest the broccoli leaves too, dry and powder them. They'd be more tough, so powdering would be better. The heads of broccoli have been divine. Clean too. (I hope, lol)

Looked at How-To's on pruning apple trees. I had some larger branches marked with fluorescent tape before the leaves fell last fall, but I think more might need to come off. Waiting for a warmer day when Jim has the chainsaw out so I can direct him. Was down to about -5F again last night. Snowing this morning, so no rush to get it done.
