We have a thread here (Waiting for the "eye candy" books!) that members tell us which ones they have received... i'm just wondering how long you hold on to those catalogs and what you do with them when your done with them?

When I ordered seed catalogues, I kept them for many years. I used them to refer back to what I had ordered, what I liked and didn't and then what had been replaced by a variety supposedly much improved (not always). I don't order them anymore. Some, like the Baker Creek catalogue, charge me $5 U.S. ($6.30 Cdn) due to Postal rates between the U.S. and Canada. Not worth it.
In recent years, when I receive a catalogue or two a year which I haven't ordered, I looked through them and recycle them either in the municipal recycling program or by taking them to the local Seed Swap held every February and leave them for others to use.

I am in the minority because I really do not look at seed catalogs. I do not order a lot of seeds mainly because I have that wonderful seed store locally that sells almost everything that I could ever want.
If I receive a catalog that I do not want, I call them and ask that my name be removed from their mailing list and then I recycle the catalog.
This has worked pretty well for me. So far this year I have only received one catalog.
Whenever I get any catalogs that I don't want (not just seed catalogs) I call the company and asked to be removed from their mailing list. It is always better to not get a catalog in the first place than to recycle it although recycling is a good second choice.

Usually by the end of Feb I know which ones I may still order from (again). The rest I give to my friends that want them. They sure don't go to waste around here. We don't have a fancy seed shop like some people brownrexx, I'm giving you the stinkeye . . .

I keep the catalogs at least until a new one comes around again. Right now I still have last year's catalogs on my shelf. Soon I will go through and recycle most of them.

I used to keep a few back years of Tomato Growers Supply catalogs around because of the good pictures and descriptions. Now I just keep the one previous issue of all catalogs I actually order from that year. I do the actual ordering online, but I like to sit back in my recliner with a marker and circle all the ones I'm interested in, even if they don't get ordered. Compare prices, etc.
I don't find online browsing as relaxing or easy on the eyes. I ordered some fixed focus glasses just for computer distance which helps alot. I even flip through catalogs I don't plan to order from and sometimes find some surprises that make me change my mind. When I use the online catalogs, I usually know exactly what I am looking for.
We have to take our own garbage to the county recycling center, so old catalogs get put with the paper recycling.

I will look at the catalogs for ideas and 99% of the time put them in recycling the same day. I do keep Stark Bros catalogs for a while just because I dream of becoming an orchardist.

Mine go in the recycling tub when done with them, or when I know that I won't ever order from (most of) them. I save BC, Pinetree, Kitazawa, and maybe a couple of others, but that's it.

brownrexx I wish I knew that place was there back in the days when I made trips out to the Lancaster area for That Fish Place. A lot of woodworking shops, too, along with the Mexican and mushrooms we picked up on the way back, through Avondale and Kennet Square. That would have been one more thing to look forward to!

@imp, pepperhead212, spike, I really am quite lucky to have such a place to shop. It is like walking around INSIDE of a seed catalog. They also sell seed starting supplies and medias as well as onion sets, shallots, asparagus roots, seed potatoes and just about anything us garden types would need. They package their own seeds but also sell seeds from companies that I have heard people talk about like Renees and High Mowing. They have an online catalog too as well as a paper one if you are interested. www.rohrerseeds.com/Garden-Seeds/folder/288They just renovated the store about a year ago which is why I took the pics. This place is fabulous and even has small shopping carts available. I can easily spend an hour in there just looking around!

brownrexx , will you adopt me? Then I can plead "Mom, can we go to the seed store today??? Pleeeeaaaazze!!!!!!"
Locally we have a couple nurseries with seed racks, a couple feed and seed stores, and hardware places, and Home Depot. But nothing like that.

I used to save them. My reasoning was so I could look back and see how things changed over the years. When we moved into the RV, I had to give up a lot of my stuff.

Sure, then you can help me shovel snow and hack the ice off of my windshield while we are waiting for the weather to warm up and we can go seed shopping! BTW everyone this place is only 10 miles from my house and they are open year round. I am so lucky.

I used to keep my seed catalogs longer, but I tend to look through them quickly and then recycle if I am not planning an order. As much fun as they are to get and browse through, they are just clutter - and temptation! Speaking of temptation, have a quadruple stink-eye, brownrexx!

I'll have you know that I literally just google mapped the location to see if there was anyway I could justify a little detour on our way to/from Virginia Beach in June. Sadly, it's a weee bit far out of the way.

We don't have anything like that close to us either. Whenever we go to Branson, I always try to stop by Bakercreek, but the last time we went, we couldn't take the time to detour.

Sadly, it's a weee bit far out of the way. That is so funny. Yes, too far. I have never been to Virginia beach because it is too far away. I guess that you will have to be content with either their online catalog or my photos. Sorry. I wish everyone could visit this place. It really is quite wonderful. I just drove by the store yesterday and the sign said "2018 catalogs available" so if you are interested, you can request one here www.rohrerseeds.com/locationScroll down to see photos of the entire store too.

Was with hubby on an errand today and I got him to stop at Rohrer's Seeds. I see that they changed the sign out front and when I went inside they told me that they have all of their 2018 seeds in stock. I guess that I will have to go back later when I have time by myself to shop but I did pick up some new Okra seeds to try this year. I got Jing Orange and Jambalaya. 20180116_160926 by Brownrexx, on Flickr

While I really enjoy real seed catalogs, I've come to prefer online sites better. When looking at stuff, I put things in my cart but rarely order right away. Then I'll go back and look more both adding and deleting things, changing amounts, and so forth till my order has been honed to fit both what I want, ...and the shipping charges, lol.
As for the catalogs I get in the mail, I save them for the current year, and then they get put into recycling.
