What would be your "PERFECT" garden be as far as size, type, production and so on?

Oh gosh, I dunno. I used to plow up about 5 acres when I was doing high volume. If I needed to isolate plants for seed saving, it was much easier. I moved to the city and had to plant in a container. I didn't care much for container growing. I guess I'd choose a large area if I was able. Not able to tend a large area anymore.

hairymooseknuckles, what didn't you like about the container gardening... as i'm switching over to growing in self-watering containers this year.

hairymooseknuckles , what didn't you like about the container gardening... as i'm switching over to growing in self-watering containers this year. It was me. I was so used to being able to grow rows and rows of peas, beans, Cantaloupe, tomatoes. Then l moved to town and just had a couple of containers.

Ain't no such thing as perfect, don't you know that daylilydude? lol As much as I would like to have more area to garden, I do need time to cook and eat the stuff! I am getting more SIPs; had 4 more to make in my workshop, but had to put those on the back burner. And not everything grows better in them - things I like to cover are better in the ground, as well as perennials. I haven't figured out a percentage yet, but I'm still adding SIPs. And, ideally, a Greenhouse, high enough for me to walk around in, and a door I wouldn't hit my head on.

My perfect garden would include a robot helper to fetch and carry heavy stuff, do the digging and soil moving, help with watering, keep weeds down in the rows between raised beds - all this without giving comments or advice, instead providing soothing or rousing music as requested.

LOL that depends on the year! But I guess since we recently moved our garden location, I wish the soil was in better condition. Here in NE Ohio I have clay. Could almost throw pots or made adobe bricks. Once I get my soil back the way I want it, the one I have now will be pretty dang close to perfect!
PLUS I also have a nice raised bed! I do container gardening also but you people get to fancy for me with it! I have buckets and tubs (and one earth box that was gave to me). I drill a couple small holes, a couple inches (depending on the size of the container) up the side, from the bottom, to let out excess water and GO TO TOWN filling with dirt and planting. (I think that sentence just caused my English Prof to break out in a cold sweat).

I am pretty happy with my garden as it is. I am not sure it is perfect but I like it. I guess in a perfect world it would weed itself! spike , I have clay soil too. Did you ever try a cover crop of those daikon radishes? They really break up clay.

Perfect? Hmmmm Close to perfect would be one with fencing dividing it so that I could have livestock to graze it when not in use, followed by chickens ranging on it, then followed by hogs rooting and turning it soon before planting. Said fences would also be sufficient to deter most four legged pests. Somewhere near it would be a large compost pile and a pile of mulch. A tractor to move large quantities of both would be nice. Can you tell I'm a country boy at heart?
Today my perfect garden would be dry enough to work the ground. I'm near tater planting time.

Perfect is obviously in the eye of the beholder. But I strive for the French Intensive way of gardening- including the look. I would love a full 1/2 of acre of raised beds that I could move around and place in neat shapes and patterns, with in-ground plantings in just the right spaces to add interest and color. I want that garden that people walk by and want to take a tour, but that is also super productive for me.

Right now I like what I have. It is the best that can be done in my location. I could do some off the wall dreaming but that would take winning the lottery.
Practical dreaming would be to begin building some three foot tall raised beds three feet wide and 20 feet long with walkways on either side for my wheelchair so that when the time comes I will be able to continue until the big sleep. I will need a motorized wheelchair with a hitch on the back to pull the gardening supplies around on a trailer. And of course my scantily clad female assistant will be there to make sure everything is done correctly and will tend the beverage cooler so we can be hydrated properly...well, you asked!

Perfect, to me, means having the space to grow everything I want to grow and decent soil to grow it in. Since I've never had all the space I wanted, I'm not sure what that would be. I would like to have maybe an acre or so to get started with and see where it goes from there.
